ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1444　28 September 1950

FIELD REPORT (521 - MISD - 0055)　26 September 1950

Informant was cooperative and a SK sympathizer. Deserted his unit and surrendered to security police. Subject was not too familiar with his unit.

Information seems reliable.

Inducted 3 Aug 50 at TOGWON(德原). There were approx 1,000 recruited at that time. Subject does not know whether his unit was the 226 unit or 226 Regt, but observed this number written on identification passes of civilians who were employed by this unit.

All of 3rd Bn (approx 1,000 men) moved to PYONG YANG (平壤) on 17 Aug 50 by train. Arrived PYONG YANG on 24 Aug 50. At PYONG YANG approx 800 men were armed with carbines (Russian make) and issued 100 rds of ammo and one hand grenade each. The remainder were not armed due to shortage of weapons. The 1st Co had 2 HMG.

On night of 24 Aug 50 the 3rd Bn departed PYONG YANG (平壤) by foot and arrived NAM YANG (南陽) on the west coast approx 40 Km SW of SEOUL on 15 Sep 50.

On 17 Sep 50 the 1st Co went to defend the island of TAEBU DO (approx 20 Km W of NAM YANG (南陽). When they reached the island, an order was received to return to NAM YANG.

The object of the 3rd Bn was to defend the coast line near NAM YANG.

On or about 20 Sep 50, subject saw one 57MM Gun being transported from TAEBU DO (大阜島) to the mainland.

On the night of 20 Sep 50, subject deserted his unit with the intention of joining the ROK forces.

Up to the time of desertion, the 3rd Bn was at NAM YANG (南陽).

The 3rd Bn of the 226 unit was always on the move and never engaged in battle while subject was with the unit. The 226 unit is a new unit and two-thirds of the personnel were between 30 to 54 years of age. Most of the young men were physically weak or ill. Most of the officers were college or university students with little military training or experience.
