2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was sincere but information limited. PW was shot in the back. Condition, fair. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
19 Jul 49 - PW entered the army at CHANGCH'UN (長春), MANCHURIA. Assigned to the 5th Div under the command of a Chinese General. The 5th Div consisted of approx 5,000 men.
25 Jul 49 - The 5th Div was ordered to NANAM (羅南). Departed by rail and arrived approx 28 Jul 49. The 5th Div was then commanded by a N. Korean officer. Div strength was increased to approx 10,000 men.
20 Jun 50 - The 5th Div moved by rail to YANGYANG (襄陽). Arrived 23 Jun 50.
25 Jun 50 - The 10th Regt, 5th Div spearheaded the attack against ROK and crossed the 38° Parallel and proceeded to KANGNUNG (江陵). The 5th Div continued to fight its way down the east coast until it finally reached YONGDOK (盈德) approx 25 Aug 50. Then took up positions along the mountain side and gradually fought its way to P'OHANG-DONG (浦項洞) where PW was captured on 20 Sep 50.

Equipment:
a. Men were armed with M1891/30 rifles.
b. Squad leader, PPsh M1941 SMG.
c. Two each RG-42 grenades and also a few RPG-43 heat grenades.
d. HMG Co attached to the 2nd Bn, 11th Regt originally had 9 × Maxim M1910 HMGs. Five (5) were lost.
e. Originally 2nd Bn had 9 × 82-mm M1937 Medium Mortars. Seven (7) were lost.
f. Two 45-mm M1942 AT Guns in 2nd Bn.

5th Div CG: Maj Gen KIM, Ch'ang Dok (金昌德) (김침덕)

Morale and Propaganda Leaflets:
PW never saw propaganda leaflets but heard about them. The morale of 2/3 of the 5th Div very low because of the lack of food, medical facilities, clothing and weapons. The complete disregard of life and the sight of thousands of their comrades dead or wounded had a decided effect on the morale of NKPA troops. PW claims that P'OHANG-YONGCH'ON (永川) Area has a very strong stench of dead bodies.
The most common sickness among troops is diarrhea.
The most feared weapons are fighter aircraft, tanks and artillery.
