ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1344　26 September 1950

FIELD REPORT (163 - MISDI - 0066)　17 September 1950

PW was a student at HUMNAM Technical College. All members of the school were inducted into the NK Army on 3 Jul 50. Place of induction was at PYONG-NAN. PW was then sent to an officers candidate school for 2 weeks. He was commissioned 2nd Lt in the NK Army.

PW and 3,600 other new EM and officers were organized on 21 July 1950 into the 18th Division. The men were divided into six (6) equal Bns. The Unit was then moved from CHORWON to SEOUL and reorganized into 3 (three) regiments, but the actual strength was the same. 3rd Regt composed of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Bn left SEOUL on 25 August 1950 for INCHON. Their mission was to defend the INCHON Bay Area. The present location of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Bn is unknown.

Each Bn had 1 or 2 45mm mortars but 3rd Bn had none.

Most drafted personnel haa an idea of escaping at first but their minds are changed as they spend their time in the NK Army. Men who desert are few. Very few soldiers disobey orders.

PW stated that when the UN Forces were pushed to their present perimeter the morale of the soldiers was high. Majority of them believed they were fighting a winning war. Propaganda leaflets were picked up by the troops which were dropped by UN Forces but the morale was unchanged. PW and troops were confused when UN troops invaded INCHON for they thought this was not possible because they believed the UN Forces were about defeated. PW stated that be believes he was misled and also that UN will win the war.
