ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1338　26 September 1950

FIELD REPORT (521 - MISD - 0044)　24 September 1950

PW was cooperative but not too intelligent. Information herein is considered fairly reliable.

March 50 to 21 Sep 50.

Subject was inducted at YONG PYONG and received basic training of about three months at YONG PYONG (永辺). Later PW was transfered to the 300th Unit and was assigned as a NCO in charge of the 4th Co, 2nd Plat, 3rd Sqd. The full strength of the 300 Unit prior to 5 Sep 50 was about 1,500 men. On 13 Jul 50 the entire 300th Unit was transfered to KAE SONG by train. Then the unit was again transfered to CHANG DAN (長湍).

On or about 15 Sep 50 the 300th Unit was ordered to march to SEOUL. The unit left SEOUL on or about 16 Sep 50 and marched to SU SAK (水色) to meet the 5th Marines.

Circumstance of capture: Subject deserted the 3rd Sqd on 20 Sep 50 and surrendered to the Marines on 21 Sep 50. At the time of capture subject was in civilian clothes.

Subject stated that 20 enlisted men from the 2nd Platoon, 4th Co, 3rd Bn were sent to SU SAK and ordered to recruit the young men from the SU SAK area to organize a fighting unit. The 20 EM were equipped with rifles and approx 20 rounds of ammunition each. Subject stated that the 20 NCOs organized a fighting unit of about 200 men. They were given arms from the SEOUL 7th Regt. These included 5 LMG (Russian made), 3 LMG (US), 1 PPSH tommy gun (Russian made), and about 190 rifles (50% US M1 and 50% Russian). Each man was also issued 1 grenade.

Subject heard that there was an American PW Camp in PYONG YANG (平壤).
