2. ASSESSMENT:
PW of low intelligence and very slow in answering. Claims he is not a communist. Had no knowledge of the UN INCHON landing prior to capture.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
Jan 49: PW inducted into the NKPA and assigned to the mess section of 3rd Bn, 1st Regt, 1st Div stationed at SINUIJU (新義州). Received very little training. PW is not certain of unit’s subsequent movements. States that the war started 29 Jun 50 at which time the 1st Div crossed the 38th parallel.
Date unk: 3rd Bn Rear bombed by Un aircraft at KASAN (架山). 15, including PW, wounded in the attack. Number killed unknown. After 3 hour walk, wounded picked up by truck (no red cress insignias) and taken to 1st Div field hospital located approx 20 Km N KUNWI (軍威). Hospital situated in a small village occupying several farm houses. No red cross insignia on or near houses. Hospital personnel wore arm bands with red cross insignia. PW, lightly wounded on leg, received only simple treatment and was discharged after 3 or 4 days. Walking patients cleaned own rooms and prepared their own food. Food consisted mostly of vegetable soup and rice. There was no shortage of food. Hospital was staffed with five (5) male medical officers and fifteen (15) female nurses of the enlisted grade. No civilians employed. Medical facilities of hospital unknown. Water boiled before drinking. Rooms were usually thick with flies and mosquitoes. No measures taken to control insects. An estimated 200 hospitalized at this time, mostly wounded.
Date unk: PW and eight (8) other dischargees marched back to their unit (1st Div). PW assigned to a rifle squad of 2nd Plat, 8th Co, 3rd Bn, 1st Regt, deployed on a hill south of KASAN.
18 Sep 50: 3rd Bn attacked by artillery supported ROK forces. PW’s platoon was routed out of its position and at time of PW's capture, was in retreat. PW and five (5) others captured by ROK infantry.
