2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and intelligent. It is believed that PW had no intention of carrying out the mission assigned by the Cultural officers of the NKPA. Reliability good.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
31 Jul 50: Departed SEOUL with 4 other theological students to avoid being drafted into the NKPA.
3 Aug 50: Arrived UMSONG (陰城) and was apprehended by soldiers of a security unit.
3 Aug-10 Aug: Imprisoned and investigated by the local police. PW was investigated thoroughly because his heme address until 1945 was P’YONGYANG (平壤). PW and another student were detained while the remaining three were released. PW claims that he was inhumanly tortured by the police. The majority of the local police were ROK citizens. PW was released when he stated that be was pro-North Korean.
10 Aug 50: PW and his companion departed UMSONG and made their way to SANGJU (尙州) via KAESAN (槐山).
13 Aug 50: Arrived SANGJU. Enroute, PW was investigated three times. In each of the investigations, PW gave his heme address as T’AEGU and was allowed to pass.
20 Aug 50: PW and his companion arrived INDONG (仁洞). Was apprehended by NKPA troops and investigated. Was released but denied permission to proceed to TAEGU.
20 Aug-11 Sep 50: PW was not able to proceed beyond INDONG.
26 Aug 50: INDONG People’s Committee was organized by a member of the Political Action Association of the N. Korean Gov’t. PW heard that the organizer was a student of KIM Il Sung (金日省) College. All able bodied youths were recruited into the organization. Since PW was not a resident of INDONG he was not recruited. Objective of the organization is not known.
9 Sep 50: Members of the INDONG People’s Committee recruited approx 24 able bodied men, subject included for mission to TAEGU. The men were interviewed and their background briefly investigated by two cultural officers of the 3rd Div. The men were then given the following mission. "Proceed to TAEGU and advise the refugees that they should return to NKPA occupied area because (a) the N. Koreans had severed communications between T’AEGU and PUSAN (b) T’AEGU is now isolated (c) there is abundant food in NKPA occupied areas (d) the people should return home and harvest their crops (e) the N. Koreans will not endanger their lives (f) all refugees remaining in T’AEGU will be annihilated when the N. Koreans occupy the town (g) the NKPA is now within artillery and small arms range of T’AEGU (h) the US is transporting food to T’AEGU by air to feed their troops."
To carry out this mission, the 24 men were separated into eight (8) three (3) man groups. The men were told that they could select their own route of approach to T’AEGU. The men departed INDONG 11 Sep 50. Prior to being dispatched, the men were told that unless their lives were threatened they were not to say that they were on a mission for the 3rd Div Cultural Section. The men were not issued uniforms but were given 2 days rations.
11 Sep-16 Sep: PW saw small groups of soldiers between INDONG and WAEGWAN (倭館). PW heard the 3rd Div and 105th Unit mentioned but is not familiar with details. PW heard that the 105th Unit was an infantry organization.
16 Sep 50: PW was captured by US troops at road junction 2 km NE of HASAN-DONG.

4. GENERAL:
Additional information:
PW observed a large number of wounded NKPA troops marching to SEOUL on 15 Sep 50. The troops were marching toward INDONG. Ammunition was being carried to the front by civilians on the night of 15 Sep 50 in the WAEGWAN Area. PW did not see any arty or tanks. PW heard that the 3 Cultural officers who interviewed the men at INDONG were from the YANGMOK (若木) Area.
