2. ASSESSMENT:
The PW was in good physical condition and appeared glad that he achieved his objective of crossing into ROK territory. But he had never dreamed that he would end up in a PW camp. He was treated well up until the time he mentioned to the CIC he was forced into the 3rd Division Propaganda and Culture Section.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
28 Jun 50: During the first month or so of NKPA occupation the PW was teaching at IHWA (梨花) Girl's School. He could not return to SEOUL University because he had been an active member of the University's Student’s Defense Association (頀國隊). During this period, he, together with two other classmates, listened to ROK broadcasts and in spite of NK successes he began to believe that their cause was not a hopeless one. To others who were known anti-communists, he and his friends spread heartening news to keep alive the non-communist's hope of final victory.
3 Aug 50: On 31 Jul 50 he and two classmates decided to leave SEOUL and attempt to enter ROK territory. 3 Aug 50, these three departed south. Their route took them through CH'UNGJU (忠州), HAMCH'ANG (咸昌), SANGJU (尙州), T'AEJON (大田), near KUMCH’ON (金泉), P'YONGYANG (平壤) and on to INDONG (仁洞).
9 Sep 50: They arrived near INDONG. On 10 Sep 50, they were stopped by 3 officers and several EM who told them to go along with them to INDONG. Upon arriving at INDONG, they were made part of a group of 26 refugees, which included six university students. This group was directed by the NK Army Propaganda and Culture Dept to disseminate to the refugees in and around T'AEGU. The news that the refugees were hampering the operations of the NKPA. The NK troops would guarantee safe passage if the refugees returned to their homes.
12 Sep 50: This group of 26 refugees was divided into several smaller groups. Six (6) students and one carpenter were in PW's group. This group departed on foot for T'AEGU via WAEGWAN (倭館).
16 Sep 50: In the early morning at a point 10 miles NW of T'AEGU, they spotted two American soldiers who were on patrol hiding in a house by the roadside. The soldiers, fearing that they might be guerrillas, immediately went on the defensive but upon hearing in English the situation of the seven refugees, invited them into the house. Since both parties desired to reach the American lines they joined forces. The two soldiers were disguised in Korean civilian clothes by the Korean refugees. They set forth for the American line, arriving at an American CP (Wilson CP) a couple of hours later.

4. GENERAL:
Heard while in SEOUL that American PsW were forced to parade in the streets holding placards with signs "US Hands off KOREA". Also actually heard American PsW broadcasting over the radio in English. The PW stated his name, rank & serial number, how he was captured, his good impressions of N KOREA and the good treatment received from N. Koreans. The American PW also sent appeals to fellow soldiers asking why they were fighting in KOREA, since they were dying in vain.
