ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative. Although somewhat limited, information seems to be reliable. PW has a grudge against the N Korean "gov't" because his father owned 5 "Chungbo" of land during the Japanese regime but was only allowed to keep 2 "Chungbo" by the N Korean "Democratic People's Republic."

T/O AND E AND STRENGTH OF 73rd Regt Units:
73rd Regt composed of 1st, 2nd (Code name: TAEDONG River), and 3rd Rifle Bns. Each Co composed of 3 Rifle Cos, Mortar Co, MG Co, Signal Plt, AT Plt, Supply Plt, and Medical Plt. Each Rifle Co originally composed of 4 Rifle Plts with 4 Sqds per Plt, but presently composed of only 2 Rifle Plts with 3 Sqds per Platoon.
Original strength approx. 2,000 men but now only about 400 men.

LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
1. 73rd Regt was located on POHYON-SAN (Mountain) as of 18 Sep 50.
2. 103rd Rifle Regt was located in the vicinity of CHACHON-DONG (1180-1460) as of 10 Sep 50.
3. Elements of the 15th Div were located on POHYON-SAN as of 18 Sep 50.
Objective of the 73rd Regt and 15th Div was YONGCHON as of 18 Sep 50. 103rd Regt was to remain and protect the vicinity of POHYON-SAN.

PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted 7 Jul 50, at SINUIJU, and received 2 wks basic training there.
Departed from SINUIJU with entire 73rd Regt on 3 Aug 50. Reached POHYON-SAN 15 Sep 50.
The 73rd Regt was driven NE to POHYON-SAN from CHACHON-DONG by the ROK Army. PW's Sqd of (1st Sqd. 1st Plt, 2nd Co, 2nd Bn, 73rd Regt) was leading. His 8 men were on a reconnaissance patrol on the morning of 18 Sep 50 when, ROK soldiers fired upon them. The Sqd ldr and 5 men escaped to the rear, but PW and 1 comrade were captured at 081000K Sep 50, by the ROK soldiers.

73rd Regt had never received any replacements of men or equipment as of 18 Sep 50.

MORALE:
As of 18 Sep 50, morale was high in the 73rd Regt in spite of heavy (80%) casualties, because the troops believed that the UN and ROK forces were making a final, desperate stand before defeat,

GENERAL INFORMATION:
CCF assistance: PW heard that MAO, Tze-Tung was sending 1,000 CCF airplanes and 15 CCF divisions to aid the NKPA.
SINUIJU Airfield had no aircraft as of 3 Aug 50, and was being used as a basic training camp (PW trained there).
Observed 19 x 2½ ton Soviet-made trucks arrived by train at SINUIJU RR station from MANCHURIA o/a 15 Sep 50. The trucks were brand new.
