2. ASSESSMENT:
PW in good health, normal intelligence, PW cooperative during interrogation. From 1942 to 1943 PW worked as a fireman on locomotive between coal mine and main rail line, distance of 12 km. The coal mine was operated under the name of KOKON WON (高根元) near the Manchurian border in the NE tip of KOREA.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
21 Jul 50: PW was inducted in NK Army in NANAM. Took 3 days of training, 2 hrs a day rifle firing. During the day all of the 1,300 new recruits were sent to the hills and dispersed due to heavy aerial attacks by B-29's and F-51's.
7 Aug 50: 1,050 men departed NANAM (羅南) by train and arrived SEOUL 30 Aug 50.
3 Sep 50: Departed SEOUL (서울) marched and arrived. T'AEJON 6 Sep 50.
6 Sep 50: Departed T'AEJON (大田) marched and arrived HYOPCH'ON (陜川) 8 Sep 50.
8 Sep 50: Departed HYOPCH'ON (峡川) marched and arrived CH'ANGNYONG (昌寧) 9 Sep 50.
Between NANAM and SEOUL the troop train traveled approximately 2 hrs a night due to around the clock aerial activities. The 2nd Inf Bn Hq was located approximately 12 N of CH'ANGNYONG (昌寧). An artillery unit of unknown strength was attached to the 2nd Inf Bn equipped with 76mm M1942 gun.
On 102200 Sep 50 they received orders to send 200 out of 300 men to reinforce the 5th and 6th Cos of 2nd Bn of 17th Regt, 2nd Div. 100 men went to 5th Co and 100 men went to 6th Co. They started the attack on the same night on discovering that US soldiers were in position on a hill. The US force retreated so the 5th and 6th Cos followed to the next hill where more American soldiers were dug in. US force opened up with machine guns, rifles, artillery and aerial attacks. The total strength of 5th Co was 115 men and 6th Co 115 men. Out of 230 men of the two companies 13 wore taken prisoner and approximately 217 men were killed or wounded. PW thinks majority were killed.

Original Organization and Strength:
2nd Div was composed of 4th, 6th and 17th Regts.

Actual battle organization and strength:
17th Regt unknown. 2nd Bn was composed of two (2) Cos, the 5th and 6th Cos. Strength approximately 400 men. 6th Co was 100 men strong.

Equipment:
2nd Inf Bn had the following:
12 x PPsh M1941 SMG
1 X DP LMG
4 X Mortar (unknown)
1 X 76mm M1942 gun
1 X Field phone

Disposition:
2nd Inf Bn Hq was located in a field 12 Ian N of CH'ANGNYONG.

Communications:
Four (4) runners to 5th and 6th Cos. 2nd. Inf Bn had six (6) runners, Also used field phones for communication.

Intentions:
No replacements or reinforcements. All casualties were sent to 2nd Inf field hospital 12 km N of CH'ANGNYONG,

Personalities:
HWANG Jae Hwa (黃在化) was the CO from 6th Co of 2nd Bn.

Morale:
Since induction PW had high morale, His morale went higher when he saw the US soldiers retreat, After suffering high casualties and great loss of equipment and weapons his morale started to decline.

Leaflets:
PW read propaganda leaflets at CH'OGYE (草溪), Reads as follows:
1, Treat captured US soldiers and ROK soldiers humanely.
2. After reading this leaflet hold it over your head and surrender because you will be given good food, shelter and clothing. Those who don't have leaflets, to put their hands on their head and surrender with the one who has one.
PW heard of American forces landing and recapturing Kimpo Air Base. Does not affect him much. He only wishes that the war was over and all of KOREA united again.
