However, when questioned on the economic situation in N. Korea, PW replied that he did not know anything in detail concerning economics or politics. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
8 Jul 50: PW inducted and assigned directly to newly activated 16th Mech Brigade at P’YONGYANG. Brigade consisted of two battalions with an estimated 500 men per bn. Majority of the personnel were high school students. Unit not mechanized as name indicates but organized and equipped as an infantry unit. PW had received military training at school prior to induction. Military training for male students was compulsory and part of the curriculum of all N. Korean Middle Schools.
11 Jul 50: 16th Mech Brig departed P’YONGYANG by rail.
14 Jul 50: 16th Mech Brig detrained CH’ORWON (鐵原) via WONSAN (元山). Received basic infantry training for two weeks. Weapons issued to entire brigade just prior to departure. Largest weapon - 82mm mortar.
1 Aug 50: 16th Mech Brig departed CH’ORWON by rail. Russian trucks, in proportion of one truck per platoon, assigned to brigade and also transported by rail.
4 Aug 50: 16th Mech Brig detraincd TOKSO (덕소) (德沼).
8 Aug 50: 16th Mech Brig departed TOKSO (?) on unit's trucks.
10 Aug 50: 16th Mech Brig arrived SEOUL. Deperted same day by trucks.
15 Aug 50: 16th Mech Brig arrived T’AEJON.
20 Aug 50: 16th Mech Brig departed T’AEJON by truck.
Date unk: 16th Mech Brigade caught by surprise on the highway just S of MUJU one night by UN bombers. With the aid of flares, UN night intruders damaged or destroyed practically all of the trucks assigned to the 16th Mech Brig. Casualties were light, however, because personnel took cover at the first warning signal. 16th Mech Brig marched south thereafter; passed KOCH’ANG (居昌), HYOPCH’ON (陜川).
Date unk: 1st Bn, 2nd Bn, in that order, made a night crossing of the NAKTONG River (exact location unknown). Prior to crossing, observed 5 x T-34/85 tanks on the W bank of river. PW observed one of the tanks fording the river along with the 2nd Bn. Depth of river was a little over 1 m.
o/a 1 Sep 50: 2nd Bn took up positions on a hill (location unknown) which was being held by elements of the 9th Div. PW observed 50 to 60 infantryman of the 9th Div on this hill. It was reported, at this time, that 1st Bn was encircled by US forces, somewhere to the North of 2nd Bn sector.
o/a 6 Sep 50: 2nd Bn abandoned hill after suffering 50% casualties. US artillery accounted for most of the casualties. The 50 to 60 men of 9th Div, who were reportedly veterans compared to 2nd Bn, 16th Mech Brig, fought tenaciously against overwhelming US fire superiority. Consequently, elements of the 9th Div defending hill, together with 2nd Bn, were completely annihilated. PW believes that, at the most, 100 out of the 2nd Bn managed to escape. PW deserted his unit immediately after retreating from hill.

Unit Organization and strength:
1. Original organization and strength:
2nd Bn, 16th Mech Brig
