1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW cooperative, observant.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology: Inducted 15 Jul 50, CHINNAMP'O (鎭南浦). 4,000 men, recent conscripts, received 15 days basic training consisting of manual of arms, with wooden rifles.
1 Aug 50 - 2,000 conscripts departed CHINNAMP'O by rail, arrived P'YONGYANG (平壤) same day. Changed to another train and departed same night, arrived SEOUL 3 Aug 50, and remained in CHUNG ANG CH’ONG (中央廳) (Center Hall) for 7 days. In this Center Hall, PW observed approximately 10,000 or more other conscripts. This Center Hall is being used as a replacement center, and for 7 days PW observed troops being shipped out and fresh conscripts coming in. As far as PW knows and heard, no replacements were trained for more than 15 days.
10 Aug 50 - 2,000 replacements departed SEOUL, marched. While crossing the HAN River, replacements were strafed by aircraft. Casualties were 100 men wounded, killed or drowned. Arrived YONGDUNGP’O (永登浦) 12 Aug 50. Remained in a High School for 8 days. In the school building and its immediate surrounding areas PW observed many offensive type hand grenades and ox carts. Also observed 50 men armed with rifles and grenades marching toward SUWON.
20 Aug 50 - 1,900 replacements departed YONGDUNGP’O Area, marched, arrived TAEJON 3 Sep 50. Between YONGDUNGP’O and TAEJON PW observed about 3,000 NKPA troops and replacements heading south. All unarmed. Also observed 5 tanks heading south. Exact place and date unk. Also observed 5 or 6 artillery pieces being towed by trucks heading south. At TAEJON, PW and other replacements in same group were assigned to various units in the 16th Mechanized Brigade. No motorcycles in unit.
3 Sep 50 - Departed TAEJON with 3rd Co (135 men), crossed the NAKTONG (洛東) River and went into hiding in a small village in CHANGNYONG (昌寧) Area, 7 Sep 50. Heard that the 4th Div was fighting somewhere in the vicinity of CHANGNYONG.
12 Sep 50 - PW's Co was forced to go ahead and cover the rear of the retreating elements of the 4th Div. PW deserted his Co and hid in a ditch off the road and observed the UN troops passing by. Remained in hiding all night and surrendered to UN troops 13 1500 Sep 50. While hiding in the ditch PW saw many aircraft bombing and strafing a hill that the elements of the 4th Div occupied. Also mortar and artillery shells from the ground forces. PW estimated at least 500 men became casualties in the 4th Div.


Unit Organization and Strength:
Original Strength - 13 men (3rd Co)

Equipment: Replacements were issued only rifles and grenades before crossing NAKTONG. PW observed no armor, artillery pieces or heavy weapons attached to the 3rd Co.

Intention: Intention of 3rd Co was to occupy and police MIRYANG. Heard MIRYANG was captured by NKPA 4th Div.

Personalities: Heard the motorcycle Bn CO was killed and the Co CO and Plt Ldr were wounded. Names unknown.

Morale: Morale of PW, low due to aircraft bombing and strafing and lack of food.

Propaganda Leaflets: Propaganda Leaflets observed twice-once in TAEJON and once near SEOUL. Reaction of PW after having read the contents of leaflet was great. Wanted to surrender immediately.
