1. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very sincere and cooperative. Due to long period of military service, information seems reliable.

2. T/O & E OF PW’S UNIT:
5th Div, 10th Regt, 2nd Bn, 6th Co:
6th Company composed of three (3) Rifle Platoons and a HMG Platoon.
Rifle Platoon:

(1) 4 x DP LMG, 1,500 rounds per gun

Disposition Of Units:
5th Div Hq was located on the highest mountain N of POHANG airfield on 14 Sep 50.
10th Regt was located approx 5 Km N of the airfield on 12 Sep 50.
11th Regt was located on a mountain N of POHANG on 12 Sep 50.
12th Regt was following directly behind the 11th Regt

PW believes that the only 10% of the original equipment of 10th Regt remained in operating condition at the time of his capture, on 14 Sep 50.

KIM, Chang Dok (Maj Gen) was replaced by a Maj Gen at POHANG on the end of Aug 50.
PW stated that 2nd Bn CO was killed in action on 12 Sep 50.

4. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Conscripted into the North-East People's Liberation Army (東北人民解放軍) at PINKANG SONG MYONG, AN-HUN (浜江省寧安縣) on 7 Jan 1946.
This Unit fought with the Chinese Communist against CHANG Kai Shek's Army in MANCHURIA between Jan 46 and Oct 48.
Sines Oct 48, the 11th Div remained in SINKYONG (新京) as a peace time army.
11th Div (consisting of approx 20,000) departed SINKYONG on 28 July 49, by train, and arrived at NANAM (羅南) on 2 Aug 49.
The 11th Div was redesignated as 5th Div after arriving in Korea.
PW stated that picked young men in the division were sent to NCO schools for approx 3 months. Upon completion, they became NCO’s. From among these some were sent to Military Academies (軍官学校) for a period of one to two months. Upon completion, they became 2nd Lt’s.
A large number of the graduates were assigned to various units other than the 5th Division.
PW stated that all the equipment which they brought from MANCHURIA was replaced with new equipment (as listed on T/O & E of PW’s Unit) at NANAM.
The 5th Division, while travelling to POHANG from NANAM, passed the following places:

The 10th Regt, of the 5th Div, arrived on a mountain located near CHANG Airfield on 7 Sep 50. They were surrounded by UN Forces on the night of 12 Sep 50. PW and four (4) other were separated from the Regt after artillery shelling and were captured by ROK Army, 14 Sep 50.

5. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
PW stated that they did not sat from 7 to 12 Sep 50 because the main food supply line was cut off by ROK Army.
PW believes there was not much ammo left in the 10th Regt during the above mentioned period. He had only 15 rds of small arms ammo left at the time of his capture, 14 Sep 50.

6. CAPTURED EQUIPMENT:
Captured carbines & M-1 rifles are being utilized by 10th Regt.

7. REPLACEMENTS:
2nd Bn, 10th Regt, 5th Div received 200 new replacements at HUNGHAE, 31 Aug 50. These replacements (mostly recruits) were conscripted in KANGWON DO and HAMGYON NAMDO.
From this group, 47 men were assigned to PW's 7th Co. They did not have any equipment or ammo.
Wounded personnel were evacuated to the rear for medical treatment. When the 10th Regt was surrounded by ROK troops, wounded personnel were abandoned without any aid.

8. ENEMY INTENTIONS:
Objectives of 10th Regt was POHANG and POHANG Airfield at the time of his capture on 14 Sep 50.
