3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
3 Jul 50: An estimated 200 N Korean youths, including PW were inducted at SINUIJU (新義州). Upon passing physical examination, these conscripts were transported by rail to HAEJU (海州) and assigned to the newly activated 7th Div. PW was assigned to 3rd Bn, 3rd Regt. Strength of 3rd Bn, at this date was 800 officers and EM. 1st and 2nd Bns were probably of equal size. PW had never heard of the existence of either a 1st Regt or a 2nd Regt as being component parts of the 7th Div. Training was brief, and followed the normal NKPA's basic infantry courses.
30 Jul 50: 3rd Regt, armed only with Russian rifles, SMG's, LMG's and a limited supply of ammunition, departed HAEJU by rail.
o/a 7 Aug 50: 3rd Regt arrived SEOUL via SARIWON (沙里院), SINMAK (新幕), KAESONG (開城). At no point between HAEJU and SEOUL, was the rail line damaged or disconnected.
o/a 9 Aug 50: 3rd Bn marched from SEOUL to CH'ONAN (天安).
o/a 20 Aug 50: 3rd Bn departed CH'ONAN by trucks. 1st and 2nd Bns probably shuttled by trucks after 3rd Bn's departure.
o/a 24 Aug 50: 3rd Bn detrucked at CHINJU. PW recalls passing TAEJON and CHONJU (全州) in 3rd Bn's motor movement south. All large bridges between CH'ONAN and CHINJU were demolished, however, by-passes constructed at all such points, allowed vehicular traffic and probably are capable of serving armored traffic.
o/a 26 Aug 50: 3rd Bn marched from CHINJU to SACH’ON (泗川). 3rd Bn received 3 x HMG’s at CHlNJU. Mission of 3rd Bn was to defend the coastline at SAC'HON against any UN amphibious attacks. PW heard from his sqd ldr, at this time, that the lst Bn had been detached from 3rd Regt, 7th Div at SEOUL, and was fighting in the T'AEGU sector. Disposition of the 2nd Bn was not learned, however, PW heard rumors to the effect that 2nd Bn was being utilized somewhere, other than the CHINJU sector.
o/a 27 Aug 50: 3rd Bn arrived small village one or two km S of SACH’ON. Two to three squads were detailed to construct machine gun emplacements for 3rd Bn's 3 x HMG's. Positions were to be dug on high ground just E of above-mentioned village and approx 1 km inshore. Defensive preparations were hardly underway when 3rd Bn was spotted by UN reconnaissance planes. 3rd Bn was, immediately thereafter subjected to intensive UN naval bombardment. Casualties were very light.
o/a 28 Aug 50: 3rd Bn was ordered to abandon position and return north. 3rd Bn marched NE towards HAMAN as a reserve battalion.
o/a 6 Sep 50: 3rd Bn committed to the lines somewhere W of HAMAN. Immediately after taking up positions on a fairly high mountain, 3rd Bn was completely encircled by tank-supported US infantry.
o/a 7 Sep 50: An estimated 40 men managed to escape, and reached high ground on the E bank of the NAM River. PW was uncertain of exact location, however, heard from a friend that they were in T'AESAN MYON (大山面). A Jr Lt who was the ranking officer, ordered the 40 men to hold the hill at all coat, threatening to kill anyone who attempted to retreat. Hill was under constant US artillery barrage which greatly affected the morale of the men.
o/a 15 Sep 50: US tank-supported infantry overran the hill, meeting no resistance. PW and 14 others captured by F Co, 35th RCT. The fate of the remainder of 3rd Bn, unknown.
