2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared fairly intelligent. He was cooperative, however was able to finish only limited information, due to short term of service.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
16 Jul 50 - Conscripted into NKPA SINUIJU. 2100 conscripts (ages 17-37, average age 25) received 15 days basic training at South SINUIJU. Fired 3 rounds on rifle range.
3 Aug 50 - 2,100 conscripts designated NKPA 73rd Ind (Inf) Regt. Left South SINUIJU by rail.
o/a 15 Aug 50 - 73rd Regt arrived SEOUL via SINANJU (新安州), P'YONGYANG (平壤), P'YONGSAN (平山), KAESONG (開城). Left SEOUL immediately, by rail.
17 Aug 50 - 73rd Ind Regt arrived WONJU (原州) via KOKSU-Ri (谷水里). Left by foot, same day.
20 Aug 50 - 73rd Ind Regt arrived CH’ONGSONG via CHECH’ON (堤川), TANYANG (丹陽), YONGJU (榮州), ANDONG (安東), UISONG (義城). Continued march south.
27 Aug 50 - 73rd Ind Regt arrived in KUSAN-DONG (九山洞) (1187-1489) Area. Engaged immediately by US-ROK Army units. Attacked by US aircraft. Heavy casualties from artillery and mortar shelling. 2nd Bn strength reduced to 300 (original strength 700).
27-29 Aug 50 - 73rd Ind Regt re-designated 574th Ind Regt (hearsay from fellow soldiers).
29 Aug 50 - US-ROK Army units withdrew. 574th Ind Regt advanced south of KUSAN-DONG over dirt road.
30 Aug 50 - 574th Ind Regt arrived at northern outskirts CHACH’ON-DONG (恣川洞). Immediately engaged by US-ROK Army units.
30 Aug - 2 Sep 50 - Artillery and mortar shelling from US-ROK army position. Strafed and bombed by US aircraft.
2 Sep 50 - 574th Ind Regt withdrew from CHACH’ON-DONG onto a wooded mountains 12 km E of CHACH’ON-DONG. Primary objective of 574th Ind Regt was YONGCH’ON (永川) therefore conquest of CHACH’ON-DONG was left to other units (hearsay from fellow soldiers).
7 Sep 50 - 150 men of the 1st Bn left the wooded mountain for YONGCH’ON, leaving behind 20 men to construct defensive positions (trenches, fox-holes).
8 Sep 50 - 150 troops of 2nd Bn left the wooded mountain for YONGCH’ON, leaving behind 20 troops tar defensive duties. 3rd Bn (strength - 70) remained in wooded mountain to maintain defensive positions. Two (2) battalions were to arrive at the wooded mountain from the north to reinforce 574th Ind Regt (hearsay from fellow soldiers).
11-14 Sep 50 - The 574th Ind Regt defensive position in the wooded mountain (12 km E of CHACH'ON-DONG) was shelled by US-ROK artillery and mortars. Strafed and bombed by US aircraft.
12 1200 Sep 50 - Surrender Leaflets were dropped on 574th Ind Regt positions in the wooded mountain. PW and 2 others decided to surrender and left the unit area.
14 1500 Sep 50 - Surrendered to ROK Army unit 12 km E of CHACH'ON-DONG.
