ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1176　19 September 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0805)　18 September 1950

PW’s physical condition was good but his memory was very poor. Further interrogation not recommended.

15 Mar 50 - Inducted at NAJIN (羅津), into the 15th Div, 40th Arty Regt, 3rd Bn, 9th Btry as a telephone operator. Received political indoctrination, basic infantry training, and training in operation of telephone for a period of 3 months at NAJIN.

21 Jun 50 - 40th Arty Regt departed NAJIN with orders to go on maneuvers.

25 Jun 50 - Arrived at CH’ORWON (鐵原) by train and immediately departed for P’OCH’ON (抱川) by truck.

29 Jun 50 - Arrived at CH’UNCH’ON (春川). via P’OCHON.

1 Jul 50 - Arrived at HONGCH’ON (洪川) by truck. The 40th Arty Regt fired 10 rounds enroute from CH’UNCH’ON to HONGCH’ON.

4 Jul 50 - Crossed the FAN River by boat and arrived at YOJU (驪州).

12 Sep 50 - Arrived at YONGCH’ON (永川) via KUMCH’ON (金泉) SONSAN and KUNWI. The 40th Arty Regt fired missions several times enroute and lost about 5 pieces.

13 Sep 50 - 2nd and 3rd Bns of the 40th Arty Regt advanced to a point 8 km SE of YONGCH’ON and went into action. Both Bns were probably annihilated by UN aircraft and by mop up action by the ROK forces.

Original Organization and Strength: The original 9th Btry, 3rd Bn, 40th Arty Regt, 15th Div was composed of 85 men.

Last Known Composition of Unit: 1st Bn remained at YONGCH’ON and did not go into action with the 2nd and 3rd Bns, therefore PW was unable to give further information. However, PW heard that the 15th Div was wiped out at YONGCH’ON.

The 40th Arty Regt was equipped with 24 x 76-mm M1942 and 12 x 122-mm M1938 Howitzers.

15th Div was organized at HOERYONG (會寧), date unknown.

Dispositions: Unknown

Roads: PW travelled by truck down to YONGCH'ON. He believes the road was made passable by constant maintenance.

Bridges: HAN River was crossed on boats but other smaller rivers were spanned by repaired bridges.

Telephone: PW had portable telephone which was used in communication between Bn CP and the Co CP.

Morale was high among the troops because of repeated advances. They were made to believe that victory would be attained without difficulty. PW did not see any US Propaganda Leaflets.

PWs were repeatedly told not to surrender because they would be executed upon capture.
