2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and information seems fairly reliable. Information is very limited because of PW's short military service.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
7 Aug 50: PW was inducted at CH’UNGJU (忠州). Approx 1,500 S. Koreans including PW received 20 days basic training at ONJONG-MYON (온정면)
o/a l Sep 50: 104 men including PW departed ONJONG-MYON.
o/a 6 Sep 50: The 104 men reached KA-SAN (1156-1458) via MUN’GYONG (聞慶) and KUNWI (軍威). The 1st Regt, 1st Div was located at KASAN (1150-1450) and the 104 men were attacked to the 1st Regt as replacements. The replacement received M1891/30 rifles, 150 rounds and 5 hand grenades. PW stayed here for 2 days.
a/o 8 Sep 50: 15 men in the 3rd Bn including PW were selected and ordered to go to T'AEGU (大邱) airfield to destroy the UN planes. The 15 men led by a Jr Lt departed KASAN around 081900 Sep 50. After walking for about 4 hours, one of the men was shot by a UN sniper. Three men escorted the wounded soldier back to KASAN. The remaining 11 men advanced towards T’AEGU.
10 Sep 50: The 11 men reached a hill located N of NAMCH'ANG (8 km N of TAEGU). While on the hill, the 11 men were discovered by the ROK troops. The 11 men including OW turned North. Five men including PW decided to surrender to the ROK troops. The five men surrendered to the ROK troops and the Jr Lt was captured while running away. The other six men were either killed or wounded while running away.


Last known composition of Unit: (as of 8 Sep 50)
PW knew only about his company, because he was in the 1st Regt for only two days. There were 80 men in the 8th Co, 3rd Bn, 1st Regt. Among the 80 men, 50 men were replacements. There was 1 x HMG in the 8th Co. PW did not know the number of LMG’s and SMG's in the 8th Company. Riflemen were armed with M1891/30 rifles. No further information.

Communications:
PW stated that the road from CH’UNGJU (忠州) to HAMCH’ANG (咸昌) was in a very poor condition. Many places were bombed and bridges were destroyed.

Intentions:
PW heard from his Co CO that the objective of 1st Div was TAEGU.

Morale and Propaganda:
The morale of the troops (both old men and replacements) was low, due to the heavy casualties.

Red Cross Insignia:
PW said that the N. Koreans used the Red Cross flag in the hospital compound.

4. GENERAL:
Rate of exchange: 1 NK won was equal to 10 ROK won.
