FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0775) 15 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW of average intelligence, very cooperative. PW went to Japan on 15 Jul 40 and returned to INCHON’ON 10 Oct 45. During PW's stay in Japan, address was EHIME-Ken, SHINKYOHAMA-Shi, NITTA-Chyo (愛媛県 新居浜市 新田町). PW was at HIROSHIMA when atomic bomb was dropped. PW was at camp just N of the HIROSHIMA RR Station, about 300 men were there but only 12 men survived. PW was burned on both hands and part of chest.
After return to INCH'ON, PW farmed until inducted into NKPA 25 Jul 50. Further interrogation is not recommended, except for medical aspects of the atomic bombing.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
Inducted 25 Jul 50, at INCH'ON. About 300 men were inducted with Bn. This 300 men were called "volunteer" Army and departed INCH'ON 25 Jul 50, by freight cars and arrived SUWON 25 Jul 50. 300 men departed SUWON same day, marched to T’AEJON a riving 30 Jul 50. Departed T’AEJON, marched, arrived KUMSAN. Approx 200 men joined the group 31 Jul 50. Approx 500 men left KUMSAN, marched arrived CHINJU 25 Aug 50. At CHINJU approx 1,000 more men joined the group. Total of 1,500 departed CHINJU 27 Aug 50, marched arrived 8 km NW Of HAMAN at GUNBUK (郡北) along the RR line, 28 Aug 50. At GUN BUK, 1,500 were divided into 2 units, half went to 7th Div and half to 6th Div. 8th Co. CO told PW that 6th Div was called 659 Unit. Told not to mention the 6th Div, just the 659 Unit.
PW and 5 men were assigned to 6th Div, 1st Regt, 3rd Bn, 8th Co, 1st Plt, lst Sqd. 1st Sqd had 8 men. Squad leader and asst squad leader were regular NKPA men. Rest were "volunteer" Army men.
2 Sep 50, 1st Sqd received arms, 4 x M1891/30 rifle, average 20 rounds each, l x PPsh M1941 SMG (sqd ldr), 71 rounds, 1 x DP LMG (asst sqd ldr), 300 rounds. Each man carried two (2) (F-1 defensive) grenades.
Separated from unit on 2 Sep 50, right after 8th Co left GUN BUK. Captured by 24th ROT 10 Sep 50.

Intentions:
Objective of 6th Div (659 Unit): PUSAN via MASAN.

Supplies:
Received average of 2 rice balls a day. No food delivered after INCH’ON 25 Jul 50. Received rice from farmers. Ammunition last received at GUN BUK 3 Sep 50.

Morale and Propaganda:
Morale: Low, not enough food, ammunition and training. Once PW’s sqd ldr told men if the condition continued 1 more month they would all be dead.
Leaflets: On 1 Sep 50, PW saw leaflets dropped by UN aircraft 200 m W of GUN BUK. PW picked leaflet up and read it. PW hid it in pocket and waited for a chance to desert.

Knowledge of Other Unit:
29 Aug 50, at GUN BUK, 8th Co CO told them that 659 Unit and 657 Unit received orders to take MASAN. PW did not know strength weapons, etc, of 657 Unit.

Strength and Weapons: Present unknown
US PsW: PW saw 2 x US soldiers at P'YONGT'AEK. Taken to SEOUL. One had a leg wound.
26 Jul 50, 2 US soldier were forced to march with one guard accompanying these two PsW. PW heard there is a PW camp in SEOUL, but not able to give its location.

Pay System in NKPA:
Soldiers are not being paid at present, but had been told that all soldiers are going to get a bonus after the victory and victory is near. At INCH'ON prior to 25 Jun 50, 10 sho of rice used to cost 3,000 S. Korean WON but around 20 Jul 50, people had to pay 12,000 S. Korean Won. PW never saw N. Korean Won used in INCH’ON up till 20 Jul 50.

Supply Dump:
10 Jul 50, PW heard from people who actually camouflaged the fuel drums (either gasoline or oil) that 2,000 drums were hidden between the INCH'ON dock and SUIN (水仁) Station, 2 km SE of INCH’ON Station. Distance between dock and SUIN Station is approx 100 meters. Drums were covered by sand and concealed parallel to the railroad tracks about 30-40 meters off N side of the RR tracks.
These 2,000 drums were taken from dock after an air raid by 4 x F-51 fighter around 2 Jul 50. There were 12 large fuel tanks before attack. 10 out of 12 were destroyed. 2,000 drums were salvaged from the two remaining tanks.
