2. ASSESSMENT:
PW seemed of average intelligence and was in good physical condition. He stated that he was forced to join the Communist Youth Organization Sep 49. While PW’s Bn was fighting on a hill approx 8 km South of MASAN, PW and 5 others picked up a UN Safe Conduct Pass leaflet and hid in the hill when his Bn was forced to retreat from the area. He stayed in the hill with the other five and surrendered to US Forces on 12 Sep 50. Further interrogation not recommended.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
Inducted in SINCH'ON Feb 50 and assigned to the 7th Security Guard Regt, 4th Bn, 2nd Co. For three months engaged in close-order drill and building construction work. Departed SINCH’ON for. KAESONG (開城) on foot 25 Jun 50 with 400 men of the 4th Bn, less arms. Arrived KAESON on 10 Jul 50 and after 3 days stay departed for SEOUL over mountain trails 13 Jul 50. Enroute on one occasion, bombed and strafed by two twin engined UN aircraft. Approx 20 casualties.
Arrived SEOUL 25 Jul 50 and, after 5 days stay in a school house, departed for T’AEJON (大田) on 30 Jul 50 on foot. Arrived T’AEJON On 15 Aug 50. Attacked by aircraft on one occasion but no aircraft was observed as PW’s Bn took shelter in a RR tunnel for five days. Received an M1891/30 rifle with bayonet and 70 rounds. Departed T’AEJON for YOSU (麗水) 20 Aug 50 over mountain trails. Arrived YOSU o/a 30 Aug 50 via KUMSAN (錦山), CHINAN (鎭南), CHONJU (全州), NAMWON (南原), KURYE (求礼) SACH’ON (泗川). Attacked by UN aircraft. No casualties in Bn. The 4th Bn was here assigned to the 7th Div, 2nd Regt and designated the 2nd Bn.
After 5 days at YOSU the 2nd Bn departed for HADONG (河東) 4 Sep 50. PW and 110 men traveled on three boats and the other men by truck. Arrived at HADONG on evening of 4 Sep 50 and on the following day crossed the NAM River with all 400 members of the 2nd Bn. Arrived at a high hill located 8 km S of MASAN after 2 days march and was heavily attacked by UN aircraft and artillery 7 Sep 50. PW served his unit as a food and ammunition carrier.
During the three hour fighting PW's Bn lost most of its men and was forced to abandon the hill but Safe Conduct Passes were dropped over this area and six men including PW kept these passes and departed the Bn during the retreat. The six men remained in a small village for 3 days and surrendered to US Forces 12 Sep 50.

Last known composition of unit:
The 2nd Regt of 7th Div was composed of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bns. Approx 400 men in the 2nd Bn. Further details unknown.

Equipment:
The 2nd Bn was equipped with 6 x 82mm mortars, 12 x MAXIM HMG, 20 x LMG, 20 x M1941 SMG. Further details unknown. Most of the above equipment was believed to have been lost.

Unit History:
The 7th Div's code name was “POKSONGNAMU” (복숭나무) or “peach tree” Further details unknown.

Disposition:
No info of other units in area or their CP’s. Food was confiscated from farms in the captured area. Although PW was engaged in carrying ammunition to front line he had no knowledge of ammunition storage as he only made trips between a point, where ammunition was brought from rear areas by other soldiers, and the front line.

Communications:
Roads: PW traveled along mountain trails most of the time. The trails were narrow and steep and quite dangerous for night marches.
Railroads: Unknown
Bridges: Most bridges were destroyed. The bridges of the NAM River were not repaired. Crossed the river by wading.

Intentions:
PW was told by his Bn CO 4 Sep 50 that their mission was to attack PUSAN. Further details unknown.

Morale & Propaganda:
Morale: Morale of the troops was neither high nor low until they reached T’AEJON where it fell because of lack of food and fatigue.
Propaganda: PW was told how the NKPA soldiers were killed and tortured when captured and also of how the ROK Govt made the people suffer by cooperating with the US invaders.

Leaflets:
PW surrendered with a UN Safe Conduct Pass and believed that more leaflets would cause more NKPA troops to surrender. He also stated that most men were inclined to believe the statements signed by commanding officer of the allied forces General Douglas MacArthur.
