2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be very unintelligent. He was fairly cooperative, however unable to remember units and tactical movement. PW considered unreliable by interrogator,

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
2 Jul 50 - Conscripted into NKPA, SINUIJU
5 Jul 50 - 450 conscripts (all farmers, ages 17-29; average age 20) left SINUIJU via rail arrived same day, HAEJU (海州). Received 15 days basic military training consisting of dismounted drill, military discipline.
20 Jul 50 - Completed training. Issued rifles and 100 rounds Fired 2 rounds at range, HAEJU.
21 Jul 50 - 450 conscripts activated into 3rd Bn, 3rd Regt, 7th Div, HAEJU. 3rd Bn left HAEJU. Other 7th Div units unknown.
O/a 24 Jul 50 - 3rd Bn crossed 38° Parallel.
O/a 25 Jul 50 - 3rd Bn entered SEOUL.
26 Jul 50 - 3rd Bn left SEOUL on foot.
26 Jul - 19 Aug 50 - Route unknown. Marched only during night over mountain road, resting in wooded areas along road or in village huts. No air interdiction during this period.
19 Aug 50 - 3rd Bn arrived at UIRYONG (宜寧).
20 Aug 50 - 3rd Bn left UIRYONG on foot. On same day crossed NAM River (南江). River 5 feet at deepest point. 3rd Bn continued southeast direction. 3rd Bn engaged by US Army units in wooded hills 10 km NW of HAMAN (咸安). 3rd Bn units dispersed, retreated into nearby hill.
20 Aug - 10 Sep 50 - 3rd Bn units shelled by US artillery-mortars. High casualties (number, unknown). No supplies or replacements received.
11 Sep 50 - 3rd Bn unit position showered with ‘Surrender Leaflets’ by US aircraft. Surrender Leaflets were printed in green ink. Guaranteed fair treatment to PsW. Instructed. NKPA troops to bring weapons when surrendering. PW and other conscripts from same unit, hiding in hut, decided to surrender although previously warned by unit officers not to surrender under penalty of death. At night, same day PW and 5 observed bursts of star-shells in SE area. Proceeded toward area.
12 1200K Sep 50 - PW and 5 approached US position approximately 8 km NW of HAMAN. Presented ‘Surrender Leaflets’ and surrendered to US troops.

Morale:
Until first engagement with US Army unit 10 km NW of HAMAN, unit morale fairly high. After first encounter, unit morale, especially among conscripts, was low. Threatened several times by unit officers against surrendering with death penalty. In spite of threats, PW believes most conscripts want to surrender at first opportunity. Believes US Surrender Leaflets affective in inducing NKPA troops to surrender.
