FIELD REPORT (164 - LDI - 0856) 14 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Information is limited because the informant was a newly conscripted replacement.

3. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Conscripted 25 Jul 50, at SUWON with 67 other South Koreans. On 26 Jul 50, the newly conscripted troops marched to SOJONG RI. From SOJONG RI, the conscriptees marched by night to PYONGTAEK, where they were joined by 1000 South Korean conscriptees. Both groups of conscripts were here formed into the 1st Replacement Regiment marched by night through TAEJON, KUMSAN, CHANGSU, CHINJU, and arrived at PYONGCHON, 16 Aug 50. At PYONGCHON, the informant was assigned to the 8th Co, 3rd Battalion. On 19 Aug 50, the informant was issued a rifle (no ammo). From PYONGCHON, the informant's battalion marched to TONGCHON (arrived 3 Sep 50). On 3 Sep 50, the informant deserted his unit and made his way toward American lines. He gave himself up near HAMAN 10 Sep 50.

5. DISPOSITION OF UNIT:
The 3rd Battalion; 13th Regiment was last located (10 Sep 50) 4 Km west of TONGCHON. The 3rd Battalion Headquarters was located within the village of TONGCHON.

6. ESTIMATED STRENGTH OF ABOVE UNIT:
3rd Bn, 13th Regt: 200 troops as of 10 Sep 50.

7. ARMOR:
1 x T-34/85 Tank was observed in TONGCHON on 3 Sep 50.

8. ARTILLERY:
The 13th Regt’s artillery pieces were last seen in the mountains 2 Km west of TONGCHON, 3 Sep 50.

9. REPLACEMENTS:
The informant was one of the 1,000 South Korean conscripts received by the 6th Division on 6 Aug 50.
The wounded troops of the 13th Regiment were evacuated through channels to the Division Field Hospital in the railroad tunnel of PYONGCHON.

10. MORALE:
Because of low morale among the replacements, there has been an increase in desertions.

11. US PWs
About 30 US POW's were observed at SUWON. The POW's were held in the building in front of the SUWON Railroad Station.

12. SOUTH KOREAN SENTIMENT:
The South Koreans are mostly hostile to the NK Army because of compulsory conscription, discrimination against South Korean conscriptees, and confiscation of their food stores.
