2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and reliable but information limited by low educational level. PW deserted his unit because of heavy shelling by ROK Forces. Found unit surrounded - surrendered. No further interrogation recommended.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
Inducted 17 Mar 50 at NAJIN (羅津) with two (2) car loads of conscripts. One month of training. Two months labor in Army. Left NAJIN 21 Jun 50 by rail to CH’ORWON (鐵原) arrived 25 Jun. Left for front below 38°. Fought through WONJU (原州), CH’UNGJU (忠州) and CH’ONGJU (淸州), then east through mountain roads via YONGJU (榮州), YECH’ON (醴泉), ANDONG (安東), UISONG (義城), UIHUNG (義興) to YONGCH’ON. Artillery frequently in action. Unit south of YONGCH’ON about 3 days.

Unit Organization:
40 men in communication platoon. 6 squads on 6 men each. About 10,000 in 15th Div. 1 x artillery Regt, 3 x Bns of artillery, 3 x Cos in a Bn. Battle strength same. PW states few casualties prior to YONGCH’ON, where artillery Regt was annihilated.

Equipment:
PW states about 13 x 76mm M1942 field guns, 16 x 122mm M1938 howitzers. Men armed with M1891/30 rifles. Sqd ldr to a company supplied with PPsh M1941 submachine gun.
16 x SU-76 to 15th Div originally. Communications unit originally had 4 reels telephone wire. Recovered wire left by ROK and US units. Equipment transported by ox cart and coolies.

Unit duties:
Setting up communications between filed pieces.

Unit History:
Organized in Mar 50. Reconditioned field pieces arrived in Jun 50 by rail.

Disposition:
In YONGCH’ON field pieces on plain to south of town at IMP’O DONG.

Communications:
Telephone lines to rear CP.

Intentions:
Capture of YONGCH’ON.

Morale:
No desire to fight. Conscripted against will. Rations fairly regular. PW states enlisted men were not communists. Men Believed they would be killed if they surrendered and that their parents would be killed if they deserted. PW believed leaflets and was ready to surrender. Carried Safe Conduct Pace. PW reports dissatisfaction among people with communism. No broadcast heard.
