FIELD REPORT (164 - LDI - 0837) 13 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and seems quite intelligent. PW seems reliable.
On 9 Sep 50, the Arty Regt arrived at a mountain 8 km SE of YONGCHON.
On 10 Sep 50, at 0500 hrs the unit was attacked by unk ROK troops.
Because they were out-numbered, PW believes the Arty Regt (150 men) was wiped out.
While PW was trying to cross a RR track, he was stopped by ROK troops who were guarding the area and taken prisoner.

3. T/O & E OF PW’S UNIT:
15th Div: Approx 10,000 men.
Arty Regt, 800 men; three Bns to a Regt (in each Bn 240 men), Three Btrys to a Bn (80 men each Btry). One Arty Hq Btry in Arty Regt, 80 men, no guns.
In one Arty Btry they have one 120mm gun and two 76mm guns.
All the Arty troops were armed with M1938 carbines, 40 rounds each, two grenades each.
With the Arty Regt Hq Btry there was one Plt (2 Sqds) of Recon troops (13 men) armed with M1938 carbines, 40 rounds each, two grenades each. Sqd Ldrs armed with SMG, two 70 round drums, two grenades. Engr Plt (3 sqds) 24 men, armed with M1938 carbines 40 rounds, two grenades. Sig Plt (5 sqds) (50 men) armed with M1938 carbines & M1891 rifles, 40 rounds, two grenades.

4. PERSONALTIES:
Arty Regt CO: KIM, Yon Sop (金연섭) Rank: Lt Col. Age: approx 30 yrs.
Arty Regt Hq Btry CO: KIM, Yong Ho (김영호) Rank: Lt. Age: approx 24 yrs.

5. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Indudcted 5 Apr 50 at HERYONG. PW received approx two months (5 Apr - 25 Jun 50) of Topographic Training at NAJIN (羅津). Training included the measuring of mountain heights and distances with a range finder.
Instructors were all Koreans with previous training in this field.
On 22 Jun 50, PW’s unit (Arty, Regt) departed NAJIN by rail and arrived at CHORWON on 25 Jun 50. On the same day they transferred to trucks. Arrived at MUGUNG N1 on 2 Jul 50, they spent two days there marched to CHONGJU. Arrived CHONGJU on 5 Jul 50.
Departed CHONGJU, 5 Jul 50, marched, arrived KUMCHON, (?) Jul 50.
Between CHONGJU and KUMCHON, the unit was bombed and strafed by US aircraft constantly.
Before arriving in CHONGJU, the Arty Regt’s Bns were separated at KOESAN on 3 Jul 50.
Departed KUMCHON - (?) Jul 50, marched, and passed SANGJU, KUNWI, UISONG, KUSAN DONG and arrived YONGCHON - 7 Sep 50.
On 7 Sep 50, approx 1 km NW of YONGCHON, the Arty Bns were regrouped.
On the following day, the Regt continued its march through YONGCHON. Just as they entered YONGCHON, they were attacked by unknown ROK troops. However, the Regt continued its march, with two SU 76's in support.
After reaching a point 8 km SE of YONGCHON, the unit stopped marching and rested there. At this time they had two SU 76’s, 13 guns (120mm & 76mm) and approx 150 men (9 Sep 50),
The following day they were attacked by unknown ROK troops and PW was captured.

6. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
PW received three meals per day, about 800 grams of food (rice and vegetables) daily.
Ammunition last received at MAJIN on 20 Jun 50. (40 rounds per man).
Ammunition was brought by truck. The trucks followed the unit from the time they left CHORWON on 25 Jun 50,

7. REPLACEMENTS:
In Aug 50, PW’s unit (Arty Regt) received replacements at a point 8 km S of KUSAN DONG.
No other information.

8. ENEMY INTENTIONS:
15th Div's objective PUSAN via YONGCHON.

9. MORALE:
Morale was low due to many casualties.

10. SOUTH KOREAN SENTIMENTS:
The S Koreans welcomed the N Korean troops when they passed through their cities and villages. Gave them food, etc.
