FIELD REPORT (164 - LDI - 0831) 13 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Seems fairly intelligent and reliable.

3. T/O & E OF PW'S UNIT:
10th Rifle Regt was composed of three (3) rifle Bns, 45mm AT Gun Co, Signal Co (approx 80 men), Recon Plat (approx 12 men), Supply Section and Intendance Section,
45mm AT Gun Company composed of three (3) platoons, a total of 56 men with 6 x 45mm AT Guns M1942, and. eight (8) horses for pulling the guns. Unit usually carried 30 rds of HE shells, 20 rds of APT shells, and 10 rds of HVAPT shells per gun.

4. DISPOSITION OF ABOVE UNITS:
45mm AT Gun Co was located 8 Km West of KIGYE on 5 Sep 50.
Rifle units of 10th Regt were located in mountains to the south of 45mm AT Gun Co.

5. ESTIMATED STRENGTH OF ABOVE UNITS:
On 5 Sept 50, the 45mm AT Gun Co had 40 men and 2 x 45mm AT Guns.
30 men were issued rifles and were used with the infantry.

6. PERSONALITIES:
Capt O Bom (吳範) (오범), C.O., 45mm AT Gun Co, 10th Regt
PW states that Regimental Commander and Division commander were known by numbers. The numbers changed frequently.

7. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted 15 Sep 50 at HOERYONG and received 6 months of basic infantry training in People’s Youth Training Center at HOERYONG. Transferred to Army Horse Farm at NONGPO (濃浦) during May 1948. Transferred to 5th Div in NANAM during Jan 50.
Departed NANAM on 15 Jun 50 and traveled by train to YANGYANG, arriving on 20 Jun 50. The 45mm AT Gun Co crossed the 38th Parallel on 2 Jul 50 and traveled South, passing through KANGNUNG, SAMCHOK, ULCHIN, YONGHAE, to POHANG DONG, reaching there on 30 Aug 50. Unit traveled South over mountain paths. On 5 Sep 50, informant and thirty (30) others from AT Gun Co were sent to the 2nd Bn as replacements.
On 9 Sep 50, informant and another wounded soldier were captured by the 18th. Regt, ROK, while they were being evacuated to the rear.

8. ARMOR:
Three (3) SU-76’s of the 5th Div were observed near TOSONG on 5 Sep 50. These SP-G’s were attached to the 10th Regt and were moving South.

9. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food and ammo supplies were regularly arriving on trucks from North Korea via the Eastern Coastal Route. From regimental supply dumps it was loaded on oxen for distribution to Bns.
On 1 Sep 50, the 10th Regimental ammo dump was located in a small village 500 m S of TOSONG. Approx 10 truckloads of ammo were observed here (camouflaged by grass placed on top of the dump).

10. REPLACEMENTS:
On 1 Sep 50 approx 500 North Korean replacements joined the 10th Regt at TOSONG.
Wounded personnel were sent to the field hospital in TOSONG.
When separated from parent unit, they were permitted to join the nearest unit but were not permitted to fight with them. They were sent back to their parent unit after prolonged investigation, some-times lasting one month.

11. ENEMY INTENTIONS:
The objective of 10th Regt was POHANG Airfield.

12. MORALE:
Morale of the troops was fair. Morale generally rose when unit made an advance.

13. CAPTURED EQUIPMENT:
Large quantities of M-1 rifles and US carbines were observed being taken to the rear on trucks; also, a few US mortars, HMG’s and rocket launchers were seen.
