ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1075　16 September 1950

FIELD REPORT (164 - LDI - 0824)　12 September 1950

Very cooperative and seems reliable. Recommend interrogation by CIC to determine PW’s status. States he wants to rejoin his old outfit.

2nd Regt, 1st Division --- On east flank of 1st Division.

Present Strength: 98 men

Unit: 1st Regiment

Present Strength: 1,200 men

Inducted into ROK Army at CHONAN on 23 Dec 48. Informant was a Corporal, Serial Number, 2504130, with the ROK 1st Div, 13th Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co, 1st Plt, 2nd Sqd at the outbreak of hostilities. When unit was cut off by a NK Force, his platoon leader ordered the men to separate and try to reach SUWON by 6 Jul 50. Informant was captured by NK Force on 2 Jul 50 and was placed in the SO DAE MUN Jail at SEOUL.

On 8 Jul 50, he was taken from the jail and led to work at the SEOUL Railroad Station. On his way back to the jail that same day, he was ordered to leave SEOUL and was taken to CHUNGJU. There, on 18 Jul 50, he was assigned as a cook with the NK 1st Division.

From CHUNGJU the 1st Division traveled through MUNGYONG, HAMCHANG, to KUNWI, arrived on 17 Aug 50. 1st Regt arrived at SU DONG on 25 Aug 50. Information and two others deserted the unit on 3 Sep 50 and surrendered to ROK Force at YANGCHO DONG on 4 Sep 50.

Two T-34/85 Tanks were observed on 2 Sep 50 under the CHANG GUN (將軍) Bridge 1ocated 100 meters north of HYORYONG.

One T-34/85 Tank was observed on 2 Sep 50 hidden among burnt buildings in the center of HYORYONG. It had been camouflaged by placing straw mats over it with ashes strewn on top of the mats.

On 3 Sep 50, observed 3 x 45 mm Guns and 3 x 120 mm Mortars emplaced in an apple orchard 200 meters east of SU DONG.

On 3 Sep 50, observed 2 x 76 mm Guns in a dry river bed 1 Km north of SU DONG, 4 x 76 mm Guns 2 Km north in a dry river bed. Believes that division artillery pieces were located in the river bed 4 Km north of SU DONG on 3 Sep 50. (PW heard firing from that locality). PW believes that these artillery pieces were all shooting at CHILGOK.

Very little food supply coming in. Troops usually raided farms to sate their hunger.

Ammo was transported from the roar by trucks, ox carts, and horse carts. Those vehicles were moved only during darkness. During daylight hours, the ammo was taken off the carts and trucks and placed in ditches along the road.

2,000 North Korean joined the 1st Division on 31 Aug 50 at SU DONG. HEARSAY: Other replacements will be arriving in the near future.

Wounded personnel were sent to the Division field hospital located in KUNWI.

The objective of 1st Division was believed to be TAEGU. HEARSAY: The CCF will aid the North Korean in the event that the North Koreans suffer defeat.

Morale of the unit seems very low because of meager food rations. Informant observed many cases of desertion among recruits.

CAPTURED EQUIPMENT:

Observed small quantity of M-1 rifles, US carbines, and BAR's being used by NK Army.

On 2 Sep 50; observed eight trucks hidden among burnt buildings in center of HYORYOHG (camouflaged by placing straw mats over the vehicles, and ashes over the mats).
