FIELD REPORT (164 - LDI - 0821) 12 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

DATE AND PLACE OF CAPTURE: 091000K Sep 50 at a mountain west of POHANG DONG (浦項) by ROK Army.

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative. Information seems unreliable especially on dates and place names. His answers were vague.
He was captured by ROK Army while descending a mountain to obtain food for his men.

3. T/O & E OF UNIT:
6th Company was composed of three (3) rifle platoons, a Signal platoon and a medical platoon.
3rd Platoon, 6th Company was composed of three (3) squads. The platoon consisted of approx 30 men, one HMG, 3 LMG’s.
Each squad consisted of 10 men, armed with M-1 rifles (100 rounds of ammo) and 2 grenades per man.
Squad leaders carried tommy guns. Platoon leaders and officers armed with pistols.

4. DISPOSITION OF ABOVE UNITS:
6th Co, 3rd Bn, of 10th Regt was located on a mountain top approximately 8 Km north of POHANG DONG on 9 Sep 50.

5. ESTIMATED STRENGTH OF ABOVE UNITS:
PW stated that his 3rd Platoon was still at about original strength (30 men) when he was captured on 9 Sep 50.

6. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted on 23 Jul 50 at HAMHUNG (咸興).
Received training in close order drill for 10 days.
A group of approximately 2,500 men left HAMHUNG on 3 Aug 50 by train and arrived at a point (approximately 4 Km NE of SEOUL) on 6 Aug 50.
From here, they marched south passing through SUWON (水原), PYONGTAEK (平澤), CHONAN (天安), CHOCHIWON (曺致院), CHONGJU (淸舟), TANYANG (丹陽). From this point PW did not remember place names, but they marched along an east coast line, passing YONGHAE (寍海), YONGDOK (寍德), and arrived on a mountain west of POHANG DONG on l Sep 50. As soon as they arrived, PW and five other men were assigned to the 3rd Platoon, 6th Company.

7. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
PW received two days ration when they left HAMHUNG on 3 Aug 50. They received average of 3 rice balls per day. Rice was confiscated from farmers. PW received one issue of 100 rounds of ammo when they arrived at the mountain on 1 Sep 50.

8. REPLACEMENTS:
The group of approximately 2,500 with the PW is believed to be the last replacements to come to the 5th Division as of 1 Sep 50.
PW observed about 6 wounded being evacuated from a mountain on 1 Sep 50.

9. ENEMY INTENTIONS:
Objective of PW' s unit was POHANG DONG Airfield.
PW’s Squad leader told them never to surrender to UN troops.

10. MORALE:
The morale of new replacements was low.
