FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 0799) 10 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: MUN, Song Ho (文成鎬) (문성호)

DATE AND PLACE OF CAPTURE: 032200K Sep 50 approx 10 km N of CHINDONG-NI (鎭東里) US troops.

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative. Information seems reliable despite limited military service.

3. T/O & E OF ABOVE UNIT:
HMG Co of 3rd Bn was composed of three Plts; 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The Co had five HMG's. 3rd Plt of HMG Co consisted of 60 men, 3 HMG (750 rds of ammo per gun) and three sqds. Each Sqd consisted of 10 men and one HMG. About three M1 rifles for every 12 men, 30 rounds of ammo and two grenades per man. Sqd Ldrs carried binoculars. Plt Ldrs and officers carried pistols.

4. DISPOSITION OF UNITS:
3rd Bn was located approx 4 km SE of WONSAN-RI (洹山里) on 3 Sep 50

5. ESTIMATED STRENGTH OF UNITS:
PW stated that there were about 24 men left in the 3rd plt, as of 3 Sep 50. Most of them were killed in action between 20 Aug 50 - 3 Sep 50.
Three HMG's were destroyed as of 3 Sep 50.

6. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW was conscripted on 10 Jul 50, at KYONGSONG. He did not receive any training.
A group of about 2,500 men left KYONGSONG on 15 Jul 50 and marched southward, passing through SUWON (水原), PYONGTAEK (平澤) (stayed one week), CHOCHIWON, TAEJON, MUJU, CHINJU and arrived on a mountain located approx 4 km SE of WON SAN RI (洹山里) on 20 Aug 50.
This group of about 2,500 men was assigned to the 6th Div. PW and eleven other men were assigned on 20 Aug 50.
PW stated that only the squad leader and platoon leader were left when they arrived as replacements.
PW and four others deserted from the unit on 31 Aug and were captured by US troops on 3 Sep 50.

7. ARMOR:
Observed five T-34/85 MEDIUM TANKS which passed them heading south approx 8 km N of TAEJON (date of observation unknown).

8. ARTILLERY:
Observed about 10 artillery pieces drawn by trucks on the above mentioned places.
Observed two artillery pieces, one loaded on a truck and the other towed at MUJU (date unknown).

9. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food was generally insufficient. They ate an average of two balls of rice per day. Rice was confiscated from farmers’ home.
Received one issue of 750 rds of HMG ammo on 20 Aug 50. They used only 1/2 box of ammo (1 box contains 250 rds) when they deserted on 3 Sep 50.

10. REPLACEMENTS:
PW stated that his group (2,500 men) were the last replacements received by 6th Div.
Wounded personnel were evacuated to the rear in nearby villages for medical care. PW did not see any wounded return to the front.

11. ENEMY INTENTION:
Objective of PW’s unit was MASAN via CHINDONG NI at time of his desertion on 3 Sep 50.
HMG Co CO told his men to fight to the last man and never to surrender because UN troops kill all prisoners.

12. MORALE:
The morale of PW's unit was low due to lack of food, weapons and inadequate combat training. Most of them tried to desert from NK army after they had seen leaflets dropped by US planes.

13. CAPTURED EQUIPMENT:
PW observed a large number of M1 rifles and carbines (US) being utilized by infantry men in 15th Regt, 6th Div at present.

14. MISCELLANEOUS:
Hearsay: PW heard that a motorcycle unit (number unknown) came to aid 6th Div at HAMAN area on or about 27 Aug 50.
