ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 1055　14 September 1950

FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 0798)　10 September 1950

PW was very cooperative. Information seems reliable.

6th Division consisted of approximately 10,000 men.

2nd Regt, 6th Division was composed of three rifle battalions, one 120 mm Mortar Company, 76 mm Gun Company, Signal Company. The 2nd Regiment had approximately 3,000 men.

PW's signal Company was composed of three platoons. The Company consisted of approximately 90 men; five (5) wireless, field telephones (number unknown), and an unknown amount of wire which the troops carried on their backs.

The Platoon was composed of two squads. Each squad consisted of 12 men; approximately 10 field telephones and wire. Each man carried a roll of wire (approx 500 meters long).

PW stated that they were issued M-1 Rifle, 60 rounds of ammo and two grenades per man; however, they gave them to infantrymen of 2nd Regt at HAMAN in Aug 50 and were consequently without arms.

PW stated that 2nd Regt, 6th Division was advancing toward MASAN via highway from HAMAN since 1 Sep 50.

PW believes 6th Division was located in vicinity of HAMAN at the time the 2nd Regt made an attack on 1 Sep 50.

PW was inducted into the NK Army in SUAN on 18 Mar 50. He received three months basic training in communications from 18 Mar - 25 Jun 50 in HAEJU (KAISHU).

2nd Regt, 6th Division departed HAEJU on 25 Jun 50 by train and arrived ONGJIN (왕진) where they fought with S Korean Army for two 10 days. They returned to HAEJU and arrived KAESONG (KAIJO) on 29 Jun 50. On 29 Jun 50 they marched south, passed through SEOUL, SUWON (水原) , PYONGTAEK (平澤), KONGJU, IRI, CHONJU, NAMWON, KWANGJU, KURYE, HADONG, CHINJU and arrived in vicinity of HAMAN (date unknown).

On the way 2nd Bn, of 2nd Regt, 6th Division went to MOKPO (MOPPO) and later joined with other two battalions at HAMAN.

PW stated that 2nd Regt lost most of its men in battles at HADONG, CHiNJU and HAMAN during the 1½ months of travel.

PW observed about 20 tanks (T-34/85 or JS-2 Tanks) which passed them headed southward in YONGDUNGPO (영등포) on 1 Jul 50.

Observed an artillery piece in 2nd Regt, 6th Division in vicinity east of HAMAN on 1 Sep 50.

PW stated that troops bought rice, pigs, and cows from farmers when they had money. However, when they had spent all their money, they began confiscating all foodstuff along their route of march.

Ammo supply was insufficient; therefore, the members of Signal Company gave their ammo (60 rds per man) to 2nd Regt, 6th Div, on or about 25 Aug 50.

An unknown number of replacements was received by 2nd Regt. PW' s Signal Company received about 15 replacements on or about 25 Aug 50. (Location vicinity of HAMAN.)

PW stated that when the replacements came to his unit they had only. two grenades per man. Later they were issued US carbines or M-l rifles, but no ammo.

Troops of PW's unit were told to fight to the last and never to surrender to South Korean or US troops because UN troops kill all prisoners.

Objective of 6th Division was to take MASAN via HAMAN within 3 days.

Morale of PW's unit was low due to lack of ammo, weapons, and artillery support.

Since they had seen leaflets dropped by planes on 27 - 28 Aug 50, they always looked for chances to desert.

PW stated that one day he carried food for about 300 US PW's who were interned in a school building located in HADONG in Aug 50.

PW heard from his comrades that about 5 - 6 US planes bombed and strafed the school and killed most of US prisoners (date of attack was unknown).

People in KWANGJU feared the NK troops initially. However, after a short period of occupation, the NK's won most of the people's favour, often receiving fruits and other delicacies.

PW observed a large number of South Korean people who were used as ammo bearers for NK troops.
