DATE AND PLACE OF CAPTURE: 4 Sep 50 at a point approx 4 km E of CHINDONG-NI (1140-1350)

1. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
After a battle on 4 Sep 50, 5 NK soldiers including PW gave themselves up by descending a mountain, carrying leaflets and waving a white flag attached to a bayonet, yelling, “hello, hello”, to the U.S. 5th RCT.
PW believes the rest of his unit retreated 2 km W from the position where he was captured. PW joined the 6th Div on 5 Aug 50. He did not receive any training, nor did he fire his rifle.

2. T/O OF PW’S UNIT:
3rd Rifle Plt - 40 men
Plt Ldr carried American revolver
3 Sqds in one Plt. 12 men each.
Sqd ldr carried PPsh SMG with one 72 round magazine.
Assist Sqd Ldr carried DP LMG with 47 round magazines.
8 men carried M1891/30 rifles, 100 rounds each, 2 men carried M-1, 32 rounds each. All of the men carried 2 hand grenades. PW saw one 120 mm Mortar manned by 4 men, with no small arms, in his rifle plt. Three HMGs were seen in his rifle company. No further information.

3. DISPOSITION OF UNIT:
PW stated that the 7th, 8th & 9th Companies of the 3rd Bn were located approx 2 Km E of CHINDONG-NI on a mountain. Present strength of PW's plt, 29 men.

4. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
On 4 Jul 50, PW joined a civilian damage repair group after being ordered to do so by his employer at SEOUL. There were more than 1,500 men between the ages of 18 to 40. On 10 Jul 50, this group was renamed VOLUNTEER group. Departed SEOUL 10 Jul and marched to PYONGTAEK arriving on 23 Jul. Departed PYONGTAEK 25 Jul and marched to CHONJU arriving 27 Jul. Departed CHONGJU 27 Jul and marched to CHINJU, arriving 5 Aug.
The first 48 men of the 1,500 men, including PW, were placed in the 6th Div. Disposition of other men unknown.
Departed CHINJU 6 Aug - marched - arrived 4 km E of CHINDONG-Nl, 14 Aug 50. stayed here until the time of his capture on 4 Sep 50.
During the stay here; soldiers constructed one or two air raid shelters. 25 Aug 50, PW received an M-1 rifle with 32 rounds of ammo. He never fired this rifle.
On 20 Aug 50, while he was on a hill in CHINDONG-Ni, he saw forty motorcycles with 4 men on each heading toward MASAN from CHINJU.
Each motorcycle mounted a LMG. His Plt ldr stated that it was the 603 Motorcycle Regt.

5. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
Received food once or twice a day. There were 2 ambulances and one jeep in his bn which were used to carry wounded to the rear, usually during the evening. The vehicles returned the following evening with ammunition.
While at CHINDONG-NI PW saw these vehicles bringing in LMG’s, Rifles and HMG ammo three times.

6. REPLACEMENTS:
PW did not see any replacements after he joined the 6th Div on 5 Aug 50. He stated that rehabilitated soldiers always came back to the same unit.
On 26 Aug 50, PW heard from his Sqd Ldr CHO, Ki Tae (崔基泰) that if the NK loses the Chinese Communist Army will come to their aid.

7. ENEMY INTENTION:
6th Div mission was to take MASAN.

8. MORALE:
The morale in PW's Plt was very low in that it was largely constituted of S Koreans. Men in his Plt would like to give themselves up, but they are usually encircled by NK troops to prevent such action.

9. SOUTH KOREAN SENTIMENT:
FW did not know the sentiment of the South Koreans after he went into the Army. However, he heard South Koreans at CHINJU vocally welcoming the NK's, unable to determine whether it came from the heart or the mouth.
