FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 0793) 10 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: PAK, Chong Son (朴貞善) (박정선)
RANK: Pvt
AGE: 19
ORGANIZATION: 6th Div, 1st Regt, 1st Bn, Mortar Co, 3rd Plt, 1st Sqd (Code and APO unknown).
EDUCATION: 6 Years
Occupation: Farmer
ADDRESS: PYONGAN NAMDO, SUNCHON GUN, SAIN MYON, OKCHON RI, #247 (平安南道 順川郡 舍人面 玉村里 247番地)
DATE AND PLACE CAPTURED: 7 Sep 50. Approximately 2 Km west of HAMAN (1043 - 1362)

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative. Information limited because PW was in an NKPA unit only one day. Furthermore he had received little military training, traveled only at night from North KOREA to South KOREA, and had little interest in what was happening to anyone other than himself.

3. T/O & E OF PW’s UNIT:
Equipment of Mortar Co, 1st Bn, 1st Regt, originally included four (4) 82mm mortars and eighty (80) rounds, 30 M-1891/30 rifles and 2400 rounds.
As of 7 Sep 50, mortar Co, 1st Bn had the following equipment left: One 82mm mortar and 30 rounds, 10 M-1891/30 rifles and 800 rounds.

4. STRENGTH:
Unit: 1st Bn, 1st Regt
Original strength: Approx 500 men
Present effective strength (7 Sep 50): Approx 300 men
Unit: Mortar Co, 1st Bn.
Original strength: Approx 50 men
Present effective strength (7 Sep 50): Approx 30 men

5. PERSONALITIES:
1st Regt, 1st Bn, Mortar Co, CO: CHONG, Chi Ok (정치옥) Senior Lieutenant, Age about 35.

6. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted on 25 May 50 into Democratic Youth League Training Unit at KAECHON. Trained in close order drill and manual of arms at KEACHON for 3 weeks.
Departed from KEACHON on Jun 50 with approximately 200 men, marched and arrived at HAEJU o/a 27 Jun 50.
Departed from HAEJU o/a 27 Jun 50, marched, and arrived at KAESONG o/a 10 Jul 50.
Departed from KAESONG o/a 10 Jul 50, marched, and arrived at SEOUL on 10 Aug 50.
Departed from SEOUL on 13 Aug 50, marched with original 200 men from Democratic Youth League Training Unit, and arrived at SUWON, date unknown. Arrived at SACHON (1109 - 1341) on 5 Sep 50.
The 200 replacements from the Democratic Youth Training Unit were incorporated into 6th Division at SACHON on 6 Sep 50. Departed from SACHON same day and arrived about 2 Km west of HAMAN on 7 Sep 50. Attached by aircraft and U.S. troops at about 0600 hours, 7 Sep 50, PW was wounded and left behind by his unit. He surrendered 7 Sep 50, approximately 2 Km west of HAMAN to advancing soldiers of 24th Division.

7. REPLACEMENTS:
PW believes replacements are always put in the front lines. EM in PW's Company told him that wounded personnel who are sent to hospitals do not usually rejoin their units but are sent to neatest unit where needed.

8. ENEMY INTENTIONS:
EM in PW's Company told him that North Korean Prime Minister KIM, Il Sung had refused an offer of troops from the CCF on the grounds that the NKPA does not need CCF troops at the present time.

9. MISCELLANEOUS:
Many NK civilians are discontented with their “government”. PW’s mother, who is a Presbyterian, has been frightened often by Security Police who have warned her not to go to church. PW, who is Buddhist, was likewise warned not to believe in any religion.
