FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 0791) 10 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: LEE, Su Tok (李秀德 이수덕) S. Korean Conscript.

ORGANIZATION: 6th Div, 15th Regt, 3rd Bn, 7th Co, 3rd Plat, 2nd Sqd.
EDUCATION: Middle School, 5 yrs

DATE & PLACE CAPTURED: 042030 K Sep 50 near TAESAN-NI by US Unit.

2. ASSESSMENT:
Seems sincere but info limited due to short military service. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. T/O & E OF PW's UNIT:
Rifle Squad - 11 men - Arms: 1 x SMG & 10 x Rifles (50-60 rds per man)
Rifle Plat - 45 men - Arms: l x pistol, 4 x SMG's, & Rifles
Rifle Co - Composed of 3 rifle Plats. All men carried one hand grenade.

4. DISPOSITION OF ABOVE UNITS: 3 Sept 50
7th Co, 3rd Bn, 15th Regt hiding on a mountain 4 Km North of TAESAN-NI. Unit located here since l Sept 50.

5. ESTIMATED STRENGTH OF ABOVE UNITS: 3 Sep 50
2nd Sqd original strength 11 men; present strength 5 men
3rd Plt original strength 45 men; present strength 12 men
7th Co original strength 150 men; present strength 90 men
Most casualties suffered from UN Mortar fire.

6. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted into IYONGUN (義勇軍) on 26 Jul 50 at PYONGTAEK. Issued uniform (ROK Army uniform).
PW and 3,000 others departed PYONGTAEK on 1 Aug 50 and marched through CHONAN, TAEJON, MUJU, CHANGGYE-RI, ANUI, CHINJU to PANSONG. 1,000 conscripted South Koreans joined the 6th Div as replacements on 18 Aug 50 at PANSONG.
Unit travelled through mountains and arrived at a mountain 4 Km N of TAESAN-NI, on 1 Sept 50.
Informant and four others deserted their unit on 3 Sept 50 and surrendered to US Force near TAESAN-NI on 042030 K Sept 50.

7. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Very little food believed to be coming from rear. Troops generally lived off the land.
Ammo was issued only once on a mountain near PANSONG, 19 Aug 50. Rifles were issued to replacements at the same time.

8. REPLACEMENTS:
Approx 1,000 SK conscripts joined 6th Div on 18 Aug 50 at PANSONG.
Severely wounded SK conscripts were left behind with no medical attention. N. Korean wounded personnel were taken to the rear.

9. ENEMY INTENTION:
Only South Korean conscripts were generally sent out on the first attacking element. N. Koreans stayed approx 50 yards behind to shoot any person who hesitated.
Objective of 6th Div was MASAN.

10. MORALE:
Morale of S Korean conscripts was very low because of lack of food and fatigue from long marches.
Much discrimination between conscripted SK and NK regulars; favor is shown NK in respect to food, privileges and jobs. A definite clearage is established between them.

11. OTHER UNITS:
Heard that 7th Div was fighting near HAMAN.

12. S. KOREAN SENTIMENT:
Informant estimates that approx 10% of the IYONGUN (義勇軍) were volunteers. Others were forced to join.
