3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology: Inducted into NKPA on 4 Jul 50, at HAMHUNG (Training Center, 2nd Bn, 2nd Co). Training Center consisted of 9 battalions. Trained for 10 days until the city was bombed by US bombers. Primary target seemed to be the HUNGNAM Nitrogen Plant (興南 窒素 會社). Training school was not destroyed. The RR Station, RR bridge (BANSAIKYO Bridge) and a Carbide Mfg Plant were destroyed.
The conscripts of the school were engaged in combat field training, but PW, together with 300 men who were considered to be in poor physical condition, were sent to barracks, a former Japanese Middle School, located 4 km N of the HAMHUNG RR Station. Trained at this school with wooden rifles for 10 days and 3 Aug 50, 2,000 men departed for SEOUL by train.
They arrived at SEOUL 7 Aug 50, and departed for SUWON (水原) same evening on foot. They reached SUWON 9 Aug 50, and were strafed by US aircraft. No casualties. Departed SUWON on foot after dark of the same day and arrived at CHINCH'ON (鎭川), date unknown.
From here they marched through the mountains at night and reached a point 40 km W of P’OHANG-DONG 27 Aug 50. 500 of the 2,000 men were at this point reorganized into 10 platoons and were to advance toward P’OHANG-DONG when attacked by UN carrier aircraft. Two casualties. PW observed the aircraft carrier off shore.
The 500 men reached a RR tunnel located N of P’OHANG-DONG 30 Aug 50. They remained in this tunnel for 2 days. There were also 3 tanks and 12 men in the tunnel besides PW’s unit and he later heard that this was a Bn CP of an unknown unit. During the 2 days. he learned how to use the M1891/30 rifle and also received 100 rounds of ammunition and 1 hand grenade.
1 Sep 50, PW with 300 other men departed this tunnel for P’OHANG-DONG. At 2 km NW of the P’OHANG-DONG. PW with 30 men were assigned to the 5th Div, 12th Regt, 2nd Bn, 2nd Co, 2nd Plt, 2nd Sqd and experienced combat for the first time 2 Sep 50.
PW came down the southside of this hill by himself and was captured by 2 members of the ROK Army, 4 Sep 50, while hiding in a house.
Disposition: Ammunition, equipment and ration dump was located in a house located approx 500 m N of the RR tunnel Bn Hq, that is, 12 to 13 km N of P’OHANG-DONG.
Communication: Mountain trails were in fair condition. Roads were usually repaired with gravel and bridges were repaired sufficiently for trucks or tanks to cross.
Intentions: PW heard from squad leader 3 Sep 50, that the objective of their unit was to capture P’OHANG-DONG within 5 days and then advance to KYONGJU (慶州).
Morale and Propaganda: Morale of PW’s unit was low as they were told, when they departed SEOUL, that the NKPA had already captured TAEGU and KYONGJU, which was later found to be false and also because most of the men had never even fired a rifle.
