2. ASSESSMENT:
PW is in poor health. Received 1 typhus inoculation when inducted. PW lost his mother when 4 years old. Worked as laborer since 7 years old. PW did not know the Code No or the APO No for his unit.
Approximately 15 km N of TAEGU (1143.8-1457.9) 50 men of NKPA were in position from 7 Sep 50, to defend the hill with MGs. When attacked by 30 American and ROK troops, their machine-guns were put out of order. PW saw one killed, 3 taken PW and the other 46 men escaped. PW was taken prisoner here.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
PW was conscripted by force in the NKPA on 7 Mar 50, in CH’ORWON (鐵原) (1010-1720). He received training in close order drill, calisthenics, political indoctrination, and service of the HMG.

Departed SEOUL - 2 Jul 50 - marched - arrived SUWON - 7 Jul 50.
Departed SUWON - 9 Jul 50 - marched - arrived TAEJON - 19 Jul 50.
Departed TAEJON - 21 Jul 50 - marched - arrived KUMCH’ON 29 Jul 50.
Departed KUMCH’ON - 2 Aug 50 - walked - arrived - field hospital 2 Aug 50.
Departed Field Hospital 22 Aug 50 - walked - arrived - 15 km N of TAEGU 1 Sep 50. When PW’s unit arrived in SEOUL, the fighting was all over and the city was in Communists hand. In SUWON, TAEJON, KUMCH’ON and 15 km N of TAEGU, PW’s unit was in combat. In KUMCH’ON PW had malaria and was hospitalized in field hospital for 20 days. He left the hospital with 4 others and came toward TAEGU where his unit was supposed to be stationed.
Original strength of PW's HMG Bn was 180 men. The battalion was divided into 3 companies with 60 men per company. HMG Bn is deployed by companies behind and in support of rifle battalions of the Regt.
When PW was taken prisoner his unit had approx 50 men and only 2 HMG’s left in unit. The rest were damaged by artillery and aircraft strafing.

Disposition of Unit:
When PW was taken prisoner his unit was in disorganized retreat. Present location, unknown. Ammunition and ration dumps were unknown.

Communication:
Through messenger boys. When delivering important messages they take the trails under concealment. Messenger has one duty—to stay with platoon leader.

Intention:
In SEOUL the intention was to attack TAEJON, but after departing SEOUL their objective changed to TAEGU.

Morale:
From SEOUL to TAEJON they had sufficient food. After TAEJON the food supply went very low and men ate only once or twice a day. At one time PW’s unit did not eat for 4 or 5 days except for a little wheat they took from neighboring villages. PW’s morale was low ever since induction into the army due to poor health, lack of education, excessive fatigue, lack of sleep, and long marches during the night.

Leaflets and Propaganda:
PW did not see or hear of Leaflets or other UN Propaganda.
