2. ASSESSMENT:
Subject was very cooperative but not very intelligent. Moreover, short period of service is the cause of lack of information. PW was in good physical condition. Reliability - Poor. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL MOVEMENTS:
Chronology:
15 Jul 50 - Inducted into NKPA at SEOUL On this date approximately 2,000 males between the ages of 15 and 45 were drafted in KANGHWA-KUN. The men were net given physical examination prior to induction. No allowances were made for the families of married men. All men were forced to report for induction under fear of corporal punishment if they refused. Subject claims to have been beaten severely for refusing to be inducted. Draft was not directly supervised by the NKPA. Leaders of the Democratic Youth League from SEOUL did the actual work. The men were ordered to report to induction center from the place of employment and were not given time to notify their families or settle their personal affairs. After induction, the men were issued uniforms and ordered to proceed south. The 2,000 men were not organized into any unit. Time of departure was about 15 2400 Jul 50. The men were required to march unarmed.
O/a 18 Jul 50 - 2,000 men arrived at SUWON escorted by 30 armed NKPA troops. Enroute, the unit sustained 5 casualties from aircraft strafing. While under attack, the NKPA troops watched the men very closely to prevent desertions.
O/a 20 Jul 50 - The unit arrived at P'YONGTAEK. Enroute, the unit sustained three air attacks and suffered a loss of 25 men, 20 through desertions and 5 killed.
O/a 26 Jul 50 - The unit arrived TAEJON. Enroute, the unit sustained two air attacks but suffered no losses.
O/a 25 Aug 50 - The unit arrived CHINJU. Route of march was via KUMSAN, MUJU and ANUI. Between ANUI and CHINJU (exact location, unknown) PW observed a supply train composed of an undetermined number of civilian ammunition carriers and horse drawn wagons being attacked by aircraft. The incident occurred about 23 2400 Aug 50. Subject heard that the supply train was spotted by the planes because signal flares were fired. Extent of losses sustained by the supply train is not known. Subject heard that the ammunition was being hauled to a supply dump located under a railroad bridge, location unknown. Subject does not know to what unit the supply train belonged.
At CHINJU, o/a 25 Aug 50, subject observed an infantry unit of about 1,000 men. Unit designation, unknown. The unit was marching east. Subject’s unit of 2,000 unarmed men from SEOUL departed CHINJU and followed the railroad track to HAMAN and by-passed the town 4 km to the south of o/a 2 Sep 50.
O/a 2 Sep 50 - 2,000 men from SEOUL arrived 4 km SE HAMAN. At this point the men were dispatched to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Regt’s Div u/k. Subject does not know how many men were assigned to each regiment. Upon assignment to the 2nd Regt, subject heard that about 2/3 of the replacements received weapons. The remaining replacements were told that they would be issued arms in the near future. The group that received arms were given the weapons or dead or wounded troops of the unit. Disposition and strength of the 1st and 3rd Regts are not known. The strength of the 2nd Regt o/a 2 Sep 50, including replacements was about 1,000 men. O/a 2 Sep 50, at about 0200 hrs, 2nd Regt withdrew to high ground 4 km S of HAMAN due to air attacks and intense artillery fire. Losses sustained unknown. Other units unknown.
O/a 3 Sep 50 - At about 0300 hrs, 2nd Regt, withdrew 4 km W because of artillery fire and advancing US troops. No actual contact with the enemy. Losses sustained unknown. PW became separated front his unit. Strength 2nd Regt approx 400 men.
8 Sep 50 - PW captured while hiding in a farm house.

Morale:
The morale of the troops was very low because of the high casualties suffered by the unit and because of the lack of proper training. The troops were told that anyone caught attempting to desert would be shot. Subject observed several men being killed by officers for attempting to desert while under air attack.

Equipment:
The 2nd Regt had 3 mortars, type, calibre, unknown. There were no artillery pieces. There were no MGs. There were insufficient rifles to equip all of the men.

The regiment did not receive any supplies after 2 Sep 50. On 3 Sep 50, each rifleman had an average of 40 rounds of ammunition. The troops depended upon civilians for rations.

4. GENERAL:
Subject saw a Surrender Leaflet o/a 2 Sep 50. The men were told that anyone caught reading the Leaflets would be shot. Subject decided to surrender after reading the Leaflet. Subject saw many troops concealing the Leaflets in their tunic.
