FIELD REPORT (164 - LDI - 0783) 9 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. INTERROGATOR’S REMARKS:
Information has very little value. The informant is unobservant and stupid.

4. DISPOSITION OF UNITS:
The 2nd Inf Regt and its elements as of 6 Sep 50 were in the Northern sector of Mt WHASAN.
The infantry was holding the high ground overlooking a nearby village.
The heavy Mort Co was located in a gully directly behind the infantry.

5. ESTIMATED STRENGTH OF ABOVE UNITS:
The heavy Mort Co of the 2nd Regt lost most of its guns and personnel. When taken POW on 6 Sep 50, the Mort Co had 6 men and one (1) damaged 120 mm Mort.

6. PERSONALITIES:
No information.

7. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted 29 Jul 50, with 200 others at WONSAN. On 1 Jul 50, the 200 newly inducted were sent to YAYANG by rail. The troops after spending about 7 days doing nothing were sent to KANGNUM. At KANGNUM, the newly inducted were placed in the Ind Heavy Mort Co of the 2nd Regt, 8th Div.
The newly activated unit was in KANGNUM about a week training only at night because of constant air raids. After the completion of training the troops of the Mort Co, traveled by night on trucks to ANDONG by way of CHECHON. At CHECHON the unit was strafed and bombed by US Aircraft and lost all its equipment. At ANDONG, the Mort Co was reequipped with (3) three 120 mm Heavy Mort. From ANDONG, the Mort Co traveled by night to ULSONG. At ULSONG, the unit was bombed by US aircraft and lost (2) two of its heavy mortars.
On 5 Sep 50, Mort Co arrived at Mt. WHASAN with One (1) Mort and 14 men.
When taken POW, the informant was found in a fox hole by ROK patrol.

8. FOOD AND AMMO:
The informant’s company when committed to battle had 30 Mort rounds, It is not known whether new supplies of ammo reached the troops.

9. ENEMY INTENTIONS:
The morale of the troops is very low. The troops must fight because if they don’t they are shot by their superiors.

10. CAPTURED EQUIPMENT:
Captured weapons consisted of M-1 Rifles and Carbines which were issued to newly arrived troops.

11. SOUTH KOREAN SENTIMENT:
No info because informant has never seen a South Korean.
