ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 986　11 September 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0737)　10 September 1950

PW, normal intelligence, cooperative. PW was conscripted from middle school in SEOUL on 28 Jul 50. PW’s unit was at KACHI-SAN in combat with ROK Forces. When attacked by MG fire, the entire unit of 350 men scattered. Number of casualties, unknown. PW and 3 friends hid in a fox hole and when the firing ceased they descended the KACHI-SAN. It took them 8 hours to reach a deserted farm house. After eating raw sweet potatoes and wheat they left the house. Walked approximately 2 hours. Capture by ROK Forces.

PW was forcibly inducted 28 Jul 501 in SEOUL, He received 1 week's training. Due to enemy aerial activities, the training was limited to 4 hours of close order drill daily for 1 week.

On 10 Aug 50, they departed SEOUL with 2,400 recruits. Training was given by Korean NCO's from CCF.

Departed ANDONG 29 Aug 50 - marched - arrived HWASAN - 31 Aug

After 3 days of combat PW was captured. Between UKSONG (1160-1490) and UIHUNG (1160-1470) the 2,400 men who left SEOUL were dispatched to various units except 350 who arrived at KACHI-SAN. Strength of 2nd Bn of 2nd Regt was 350.

Field telephone line runs from UIHUNG to KACHI-SAN.

PW saw an airfield in YONGDUNGP’O (990-1630). It was approx 1 km square with 2 hangars and no aircraft. On 15 Jul 50, PW saw US aircraft bomb SEOUL. 4 x B-29's participated for 4 days.

Caused considerable damage to train station and railroads.

When the PW’s unit was in KACHI-SAN only means of communication were messengers and field telephones.

The objective of PW's unit was T'AEGU via KACHI-SAN. They were supposed to be re-enforced by 15th Div.

PW’s morale was low but he felt that the North Koreans will win this war because of the large area they have captured. PW’s morale was low because of the lack of food, long hikes, excessive fatigue 1 lack of training for combat and forced conscription of soldiers.

PW think that if US aircraft keep bombing and strafing the troops constantly their morale will be even lower.

PW seems to be in good heal th. Received no inoculations or vaccination. He was inducted in the army without physical examination.
