ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 979　11 September 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0730)　10 September 1950

PW was of average intelligence and cooperative. PW was in Elementary school till 15 years old. After graduation he farmed till date of induction 30 Jul 50. PW and about 500 men were called from PUKCH’ONG GUN and assembled at PUKCH’ONG Train Station. Left for SEOUL by freight car. Reached SEOUL on 3 Aug 50. Further interrogation is not recommended. These 500 men were together till 20 m N of YONCH’ON (永川) 31 Aug 50.

Inducted 4 Aug 50 at SEOUL. Departed SEOUL 041800 Aug 50 - marched - CHUNGJU - 11 Aug 50 (approx 500 men were left at this time). Departed CH’UNGJU 121800 Aug 50 - marched - SANGJU 041900 Aug 50. Departed SANGJU (500 men) 24 Aug 50 - marched 20 km N of YONGCH’ON 31 Aug 50. On 1 Sep 50 at 20 km N of YONCH’ON (500 men) 400 of the 500 men were issued M1891/30 rifles and 40 rounds of ammunition. 100 men of 500 men didn't receive any rifles because of supply shortage. Each of the 500 men received 2 hand grenades (RG-42 offensive hand grenade). At 20 km N of YONGCH’ON PW was told his unit was the 15th. Div, 45th Regt, 3rd Bn, 8th Co, 1st Plt, 1st Sqd. Departed 20 km N of YONGCH'ON at 091000 Aug 50 - marched - arrived 081000 Sep 50 YONGCH’ON (150 men were assigned as replacements to 8th Co of 3rd Bn, 45th Regt, 15th Div). 144 men armed with rifle and 2 hand grenades. 6 men without rifles, 2 hand grenades only. Separated from unit at 001100 Sep 50 and voluntarily surrendered to ROK MP.

PW heard there was one LMG in 8th Co but never saw it. Plt ldr wore pistol and ass it plt ldr carried M1891/30 rifle. No SMG. PW saw no heavy arms.

PW heard on 1 Sep 50 from plt ldr that since T’AEGU had been occupied by NKPA their mission is to take PUSAN. However plt ldr never mentioned what road would be taken to capture PUSAN.

Received average of 1 rice ball a day. No food received from SEOUL after 4 Aug 50. Took rice from farmer is homes since the homes are unoccupied.

The morale of the units is very low. Insufficient. food and training. Not able to move in daytime because of enemy air activity. Fatigue is great.

None observed.

PW saw leaflets 2 km S of SANGJU on 24 Aug 50 but was not able to read them because plt ldr took them away from the men. However, PW read one UN leaflet but he did not believe it because it was too good to be true. PW and men are told that if captured by UN forces they will be executed summarily.

Aircraft bombardment and strafing during daytime, artillery shelling at night.
