2. CIRCUMSTANCE OF CAPTURE:
PW and enlisted nurse, CH'AE Kum Pyong (채금평), M/Sgt, were transferred to the training Bn of the 13th Div from the self-propelled artillery Bn and lost their way while they were approaching the TOKOKSAN (土谷山) mountain in SONSAN GUN, located 25 km Northwest of T'AEGU on the morning of 25 Aug 50. While resting in a small village house they were surrounded by ROK troops and ordered to come out of the house. PW received five carbine wounds in her left leg when she refused to obey orders.

Medical Bn - 150 (including 40 females) personnel. Equipment as follows: 100 x M1891/30 rifles, 4 x pistols, 1 x GAZ-51 trucks, 1 x GAZ-67 truck and 4 x ambulances.

Capability of unit :
The medical bn was well supplied and all members were united in high morale to reach their object - the unification of their fatherland. PW stated that this medical bn was very efficient.

Supply:
Foodstuff - well supplied from rear Div Hqs. Believed to be confiscated from occupied areas.
Ammunition - unknown
Gasoline - Adequate supply from Div Hq supply section.
Medicine - Adequate old Japanese medical equipment from P’YONGYANG and confiscated American medical equipment from SEOUL were used. Approx 40% of medicine waa either American or Japanese made. Bandages & gauze were made in RUSSIA.

Mission:
Mission of 13th Div was to occupy TAEGU by 15 Aug 50.

Composition of unit:
The 13th Div was composed of the 19th, 21st, 23rd Regts, self-propelled artillery Bn, training Bn and a medical Bn. Further information unknown. The medical Bn was composed of 150 personnel or one accounting sqd, 1 food supply sqd, 1 transportation platoon, a physicians (two females) and 50 nurses (40 female & 10 male). They also had 1 x truck, 4 x ambulances and 1 x Soviet jeep.

Training:
Doctors all received from two to four years of medical training but training for nurses was unk. The nurses received three days close order drill and each fired three rounds of ammunition. The highest score of the nurses who participated in this firing was 20 points out of a possible 30.

Present location: The SP artillery Bn was located at SONSUK GUN, 28 km N of TAEGU, as of 25 Aug 50. See above for type of armor employed. No horse cavalry observed.

Foreign elements:
Russian military advisors were observed at P’YONGYANG in Apr 50. No medical advisors of other nationalities were observed.

Artillery:
SP artillery pieces only were observed. See above.

Anti-aircraft:
None observed. PW heard a large number of AA emplacements were constructed in SEOUL.

Condition of terrain behind her line:
Road fair. RR transportation was available up to SUWON. Bridges were all (large) destroyed but detours were made near the bridges.

Political and Subversive activities:
Anti-SK propaganda: The ROK govt was selling KOREA as a colony to the US invaders.
Sabotage - unknown.
Radio broadcast - unknown.
Leaflets - none observed.
Espionage - unknown.

Supply dumps:
None observed.

Miscellaneous:
1. What weapons are they most afraid of?
Most casualties treated by PW were wounded by artillery fire.
2. Why doesn’t RUSSIA help NK as US is helping the ROK?
This is only natural. This war is a fight among the Korean people. PW does not understand why UN is helping SK in such a civil war.
3. What do you know about American PsW?
Observed approx 120 American PsW interned in Dr. Sygman RHEE’s official residence in SEOUL on 15 Aug 50, No PW casualties were observed and all PW seemed to be in high spirits. PW heard from a NKPA interrogation officer (name and rank unknown) that an American PW stated he did not know why he was fighting. They were only told that they were leaving on a training mission when departing JAPAN.
PW treated one ROK PW who had a bullet wound in leg and arm.

Medical EEI:
1. How is the medical department organized within infantry Div Coprs or Army?
Details unknown, one medical Bn attached to a div. See above. The Hq of all NKPA Medical Units was the SADON CHUYUNAN PYONGWUN (Central Hospital) located in P’YONGYANG.
2. What type of hospital attached to Div Corp or Army?
None.
3. What type of medical treatment is administered at Div level?
Handled nearly all treatment including amputation and operation.
4. What is the average length of time spent at each echelon for seriously wounded patients?
One day. They are sent to field hospitals as soon as possible.
5. What is the means of transportation in evacuating patients to the rear?
Trucks. Ambulances were only capable of evacuating 4 patients at a time, so trucks were used.

Medical Equipment & Supplies:
1. What type of equipment do they carry at each echelon hospital?
Operating tables and amputation equipment are carried by Regt’l medical Bn. No large equipment observed. The equipment was sent from P’YONGYANG or SEOUL. Further details unknown.
Equipment was either Japanese or US made. No Russian medical equipment observed.
2. What type of pharmaceuticals are used at each echelon hospital?
Alcohol, morphine, penicillin salvarsan manufactured in JAPAN or the US. Sakochin (?), Kenisan (Stomach powder) and Daichugosei (大中合製) (?) were made in North KOREA.
3. What is the condition of hospital equipment and is the medicine adequate?
Condition of equipment was good. Most equipment was new and medicine was adequate. What’s lacking? Salvarsan. PW never used streptomycin.

Cholera:
1. Were there any outbreaks of cholera in NK or in the NKPA?
None in NKPA. One among civilians at TOMON (户問) in summer of 47.
2. Where did it break out geographically?
Korean-Manchurian border.
3. Where did it start?
Unknown.
4. How long did it last?
Approx 10 days.
5. What is the estimate of number of people afflicted?
Unknown.
6. Who was effected?
Unknown.
7. Were the troops ever immunized against Cholera? Where? When?
Troops were immunized by medical Bns by regimental groups every year before the Cholera season.

Chemical Warfare:
1. Were the troops ever instructed in protection against chemical warfare?
Unknown. However, there are several regulations concerning CW but details were unknown to PW.
2. Did hospital personnel receive instructions in care of gassed personnel?
No, but doctors (higher) could give instructions if necessary. PW waa taught in medical school concerning this field but stated that she had forgotten everything.
3. What type of gas did they expect to encounter?
Tear gas.
4. What were the types of treatment to administer for each type of gas?
In case of emergency cover nose and eyes with wet cloth. Neutralizing treatments were to be applied but name of medicine forgotten.
5. Any gas neutralizing agents or chemicals present in areas?
No.
6, Any medications for treatment of gas casualties present in rear hospital?
Unknown. All grads of above medical college received commission as Sr or Capt upon graduation and were the backbone of NKPA medical units. PW studied communism prior to entering this school.
