ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 972　11 September 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0723)　8 September 1950

Subject was cooperative but not very intelligent. Scope of observation very limited. Not recommended for further interrogation. Reliability poor.

9 Jul 50: Inducted into NKPA at HAEJU. Assigned to 7th Div, 3rd Regt which was then stationed in HAEJU. Subject received Inf trng from 9 Jul 50 to 19 Jul 50. Trainees used wooden rifles during trng. Trng included plt 50 to 25 Jul 50 time spent in digging trenches N of outskirts HAEJU. Purpose of trenches - air raid melter. System of trenches unknown.

20 Jul 50: 7th Div, 3rd Regt departed HAEJU by rail. Disposition of other units 7th Div unknown. Strength 3rd Regt unknown. Arrived T’OSONG-NI (土城) 28 Jul 50, detrained. Sustained one aerial attack enroute. Number of casualties unknown.

29 Jul 50: 3rd Regt departed T’OSONG-NI, marched to SEOUL. Arrived SEOUL o/a 2 Aug 50. No incidents enroute. Ration supply brought by ox-carts.

o/a 2 Aug 50: Departed SEOUL, marched to YONGDUNGP'O, arrived

o/a 2 Aug 50: While crossing HAN River, unit sustained air attack but suffered no loss of men or equipment.

o/a 24 Aug 50: 3rd Regt arrived CHINJU. Route of travel was via SUWON, CH’ONAN, TAEJON, KUMSAN (錦山), MUJU, ANUI and SANCH’ONG (山淸). Date of arrival or departure from each place unknown. The unit marched the entire distance except for one day that the Unit was transported by trucks, from u/k location south of CH’ONAN to TAEJON. No incidents enroute, no loss of men.

o/a 25 Aug 50: 3rd Regt departed CHINJU marched NE on road to UIRYONG. No incidents enroute. Arrived UIRYONG o/a 28 Aug 50.

o/a 28 Aug 50: At about sunset 3rd Regt departed UIRYONG and marched SE following road. 3rd Bn, 3rd Regt crossed NAM River at about 0500, 29 Aug 50. Other units 3rd Regt u/k. 3rd Bn marched E for approx 4 km and crossed tributary of NAM River and arrived 2 km N of HAMAN. Arrived above location 3 Sep 50. No incidents enrouts.

4 Sep 50: Approx 0530 hrs, 3rd Bn engaged UN forces 2 km N HAMAN (咸安). Location of other units 3rd Regt or 7th Div u/k. 3rd Bn maintained contact with UN forces until evening of 5 Sep 50. In the evening of 5 Sep 50, approx time u/k, 3rd Bn scattered in disorganized retreat. Direction of withdrawal u/k. 3rd Bn sustained 36 wounded and u/k number killed on 4-5 Sep 50. Upon being wounded, troops were evacuated to a civilian home in the vicinity and were left when the unit withdrew.

6 Sep 50: Wounded located by Americans and taken prisoner. Subject included.

Most of the weapons issued troops of 3rd Bn, 3rd Regt, 7th Div were used but serviceable. There was a shortage of weapons. In PW’s company there were about 2 Men in each platoon who did not have weapons. Subject heard the unit expected to receive new weapons but had not received them by 5 Sep 50. No details available on type and quantity. On 5 Sep 50, each rifleman in PW’s Co had 40 rds of ammunition. The unit expected to receive ammunition from rear areas, hearsay. No details on arty, armor.

Morale was very low because the troops realized they did not have adequate training. Moreover, lack of food had caused many dissenting remarks. The troops were obedient to orders and had faith in the leadership of their officers.
