FIELD REPORT (164 - LDI - 0768) 6 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. T/O OF PW’S UNIT:
17th Armored Div was composed of the 1st & 2nd Tank Bns, an infantry unit, a signal, engineer and medical units.
2nd Tank Bn was composed of four (4) tank companies, with a total of twenty (20) T-34/85 tanks. A tank repair section (10 men) and an intendance section (8 men) with one (1) GAZ (51 truck) were also part of the battalion. Intendance section took care of all supplies. Bn was broken down into four (4) Tank companies with four (4) tanks each. The following numbers were observed painted on the sides of tank turrets:
700 - Division CO
701 - 2nd Bn CO
727 - 1st Plat, 1st Co, 2nd Tank Bn, 17th Armored Div
728 - 2nd Plat, 1st Co, 2nd Tank Bn, 17th Armored Div
Five man crew per tank. Tank carried 55 rounds of 85mm ammo and 2,700 rds of MG ammo.

3. DISPOSITION OF ABOVE UNITS:
2nd Bn located at YODUK DONG, 3 Sep 50.

4. ESTIMATED STRENGTH OF ABOVE UNITS:
Only six (6) tanks of the 2nd an came to YODUK DONG 3 Sept 1950. Enroute, other tanks were destroyed or damaged by air strikes. Three (3) or the tanks damaged enroute are believed to be in a repairable condition. Four (4) of the six (6) tanks which reached YODUK DONG were destroyed by an UN aerial-rocket attack on 031600 Sept 1950.

6. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted l5 July 50 at PYONGYANG. Joined 17th Armored Brigade at SUNHORI near PYONGYANG and received 25 days training as tank gunner. The 17th Armored Brigade was composed of students from PYONGYANG and HAMHUNG. 2nd Tank Bn, 17th Div departed SUNHORI near PYONGYANG on 19 Aug 1950. Three (3) days prior to departure, the 17th Armored Brigade was redesignated as the 17th Armored Div. Unit traveled by train through SEOUL to WONJU, arriving m WONJU on 27 Aug 50. To avoid air attacks, the train traveled during the night and hid in tunnels during the day.
Detrained at WONJU and departed on 27 Aug 50; then travelled to ANDONG, arriving in ANDONG on 2 Sep 50. While travelling between WONJU and ANDONG (traveled only during night), unit was attacked 3 times with heavy damage to the unit. Departed ANDONG on 2 Sep 50 and arrived at YODUK DONG on 3 Sep 50. PW was captured there after his tank was destroyed by an air strike.

8. ARTILLERY:
No information.

9. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLY:
Food was carried inside the tanks. Ammo last received in PYONGYANG, 19 Aug 50. Fuel carried in auxiliary tanks located on both sides of the trip (a total of 180 liters).

10. REPLACEMENTS:
No replacements. Tanks were unable to function if any one of the crow is wounded because only the crew can keep the tank functioning.

11. ENEMY INTENTIONS:
2nd Bn ordered to move 40 km South from ANDONG.
Tanks unable to communicate with other tanks of unit due to difficulty in operating radios.

12. MORALE:
Low, because most of the men in the 17th Division were students and wanted to go home.

13. US PW’s
Approx 40 American PW’s observed at PYONGYANG RR Station 2 Jul 50, PW's were getting off the train.

14. NORTH KOREAN AF & NAVY
No information.

15. SPECIAL INTELLIGENCE:
Troops other than members of the 17th Division were undergoing training at SANHORI near PYONGYANG on 19 Aug 50 (number unknown). Four (4) Russian officers were included among the instructors.

16. REMARKS:
PW seems sincere and talked freely.
