FIELD REPORT (164 - LDI - 0254) 5 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. T/O & OF PW'S UNIT:
9th Div was called CHAHG PAEK SAN (長白山). Regt‘s under 9th Div were referred to as SAJA (Lion). Within the 9th Div, 3 was used to signify 9th Div, 1 for Regt and 7 for Bn, e.g. 3127 would be 9th Div, 2nd Regt, 6th Bn.

3. DISPOSITION OF UNIT:
1st In was stationed on a Mt located 300 m West of YONGSAN on 2 Sept 50. 3rd Bn was believed to have occupied this mountain earlier the same day.
The entire 9th Div crossed the NAKTONG River on 31 Aug 50. Most of the units are believed to be located between YONGSAN and the NAKTONG River.

4. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
PW was brought to SEOUL and inducted there on 2 Aug 50. He was told that if he didn’t join the army his family would be exiled from North KOREA end their property confiscated. On 12 Aug 50, PW's unit departed SEOUL and marched to INCHON. Departed INCHON 22 Aug 50 and marched to the NAKTONG River (places passed enroute unknown). Arrived NAKTONG River at 2100 hrs 31 Aug 50. Unit met opposition upon crossing the NAKTONG River. PW heard that some unknown unit would follow his. Many casualties were. suffered crossing the river. Unit engaged in several small skirmished (casualties were light) enroute to YONGSAN. Upon entering YONGSAN on 2 Sept 50, unit met concentrated fire lasting for approx 2 hours (many were wounded) at 0600 hrs on 2 Sept 50, PW’s unit started ascending the mountain West of YONGSAN and, after an hour of heavy battle, succeeded in occupying the mountain. Casualties were great and very few remained in PW's unit. After the battle, PW took off his uniform and, disguised as a civilian, descended the mountain. He was taken prisoner while attempting to pass through a check point (ROK).

5. ARMOR:
On 2 Sept 50, PW saw 3 NK Tanks (type unk) at YONGSAN. They were engaged in battle by approx 20 US tanks. North Korean tank crews abandoned their tanks and escaped.

6. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLY:
Food was looted by the troops whenever they reached a village. Emergency rations for three (3) days were carried by each individual after crossing the NAKTONG River.
Ammo supply was last received before crossing, the NAKTONG River. 200 rds were distributed to the troops. This was the last resupply of ammo.

7. REPLACEMENTS & WOUNDED:
Unit received no replacements. Males from 17 to 37 yrs were being conscripted. in North KOREA. Pw believes replacements have already been exhausted.
Medical facilities with the unit were insufficient. 2 medical officers and one (1) nurse were with each company. Medical supplies were limited; consequently, most of the wounded died. The dead were very seldom buried.

8. MORALE:
The unit was divided between communist and non-communist troops. The morale of the former was high while that of the latter was very low.

9. ENEMY INTENTIONS:
The objective of the 9th Div was MIRYANG. The battle which began on 31 Aug 50 was to herald the final push.

10. CHOLERA:
NK soldiers were told to be aware of cholera after crossing NAKTONG River,

Subject seems intelligent but inobservant. Information seems reliable.
