FIELD REPORT (164 - LDI - 0753) 5 September 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

DATE & PLACE CAPTURED: 030700 Sept 50, approx 4 Km East of NAKTONG River near CHANGNYONG.

2. T/O & OF PW'S UNIT:
2nd Div was composed of the 4th, 6th, and 17th Rifle Regiments and an Artillery Regt.
6th Regt was composed of three (3) rifle bns.
2nd Bn composed of three (3) rifle companies, medical platoon, and supply platoon.
Each company composed of three (3) platoons, a total of 140 - 150 men two (2) HMG’s, nine (9) LMG’s (each three 47 rd drums), nine (9) SMG's (400 to 500 rds per) and rifles (100 to 150 rounds per rifle).
Each man carried two (2) hand grenades.

3. DISPOSITION OF ABOVE UNITS: (31 Aug 50)
6th Rcgt believed to be approx 4 Km East of NAKTONG River and heading toward CHANGNYONG.
4th Regt believed to be located to the North of 6th Regt.
17th Regt believed to be South of 6th Regt.

4. ESTIMATED STRENGTH OF ABOVE UNITS:
4th Co’s original strength was 140, present strength (when crossing NAKTONG River 31 Aug 50) 70.
Co strength was only 50 men in 17 Aug 50, received 20 replacements from North Korea during the period 18 - 25 Aug 50.

5. PERSONALITIES:
CG, 2nd Div, "one star" general CHOI Hyon (崔玄)
CO, 4th Co, 2nd Bn, 6th Regt Capt KIM Myon Whal (金明泧)

6. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
Inducted 10 Jul 50 at PYONGYANG and commissioned as 1st Lt after receiving 20 days of basic training. Due to shortage of officers, 100 others attending the Normal College of PYONGYAPG were also commissioned.
Received training at PYONGYANG until 29 Jul 50. Departed PYONGYANG on 29 Jul 50 and motored in SEOUL reaching SEOUL on 1 Aug 50. Departed SEOUL on 6 Aug 50 and arrived at KUMCHON on 14 Aug 50 where he joined the 2nd Div. Assigned to 6th Regt on 15 Aug 50. Arrived at HYOPCHON on 26 Aug 50. On 312300 Aug 50 the 6th Regt crossed the NAKTONG River East of HYOPCHON. While the 2nd Bn, 6th Regt was marching toward CHANGNYONG, it was ambushed by US Force at 030400 Sept 50. The entire unit took refuge in rice paddy but tanks and machine gun raked the rice paddy. Informant and 30 other surrendered after the tiring stopped at 0800 hours.

7. ARMOR:
Two (2) T-34/85 tanks were observed 4 Km East of NAKOTNG River near CHANGNYONG 3 Sept 50.
Five (5) T-34/85 tanks observed in SEOUL on 3 Aug 50.

8. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLY:
6th Regt carried four (4) days food ration individually when it crossed the NAKTONG River on 31 Aug 50.

9. REPLACEMENTS:
Hearsay: Approx 70% of the troops in 6th Regt were replacements (all N.K.) which joined the unit on 12 Aug 50.

10. ENEMY INTENTIONS:
Objective of 6th Regt was CHANGNYONG.

11. MORALE:
Morale of troops was fairly high. Troops were highly disciplined.

12. AMERICAN P.O.W.'S:
Approx 15 American P.O.W.'s were seen on a truck heading North from TAEJON o/a 8 Aug 50, One (1) N.K. medic was seen aboard this truck.

13. MEDICAL:
On 29 Aug 50 at West bank of NAKTONG River East of HYOPCHON, all men in 6th Regiment were inoculated for cholera. Told that cholera epidemic was widespread along the NAKTONG River.

14. REMARKS: Due to limited military service informant seems unable to give clear answer. Information seems unreliable.
