1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was fairly cooperative; seems reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Inducted into Volunteer unit (IYON GUN) at SEOUL on 10 Jul 50. Joined lat Brigade (composed of 1,500 S Korean conscripts) and received 3 days training in close order drill. On 14 Jul 50 the 1st Battalion (approx. 400 men), 1st Brigade departed SEOUL and marched southward passing through SUWON, CHONAN, KONGJU, I-RI, CHONJU, NAMWON, SUNCHON, HADONG, SACHON, KOSONG, to PAEDUN-NI. On 17 Aug 50, the 400 men officially joined the People’s Army and were assigned to 15th Regiment as replacements at PAEDUN-NI. 15th Regiment moved to YOHANG MYON area, and troops dug in and rested until 31 Aug 50. At dawn on 1 Sep 50, three (3) companies of 15th Regiment attacked US forces to the west of YOHANG-MYON. Informant and two others were captured by US 5th RCT.

b. Unit Organization and Strength:
2nd Battalion was composed of the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th Rifles companies. Each rifle company consisted of two to four platoons. Each platoon had approximately 30 men armed with three (3) to four (4) HMG’s, two (2) to three (3) LMG’s, and approximately 15 rifles (approximately 100 rounds per rifle). Some men were without arms.

c. Disposition d Unite:
1 Sep 50. 15th Regiment Cp was located on the west slope of hill near YOHANG-MYON (approximately 1141.0- 1352.5). Approximately 800 troops of 15th Regiment were camped in this area.

d. Estimated Strength of Units:

e. Personalities:
Commander 5th Co, 13th Regt, CHE, Il Yon (최일연). Rank unknown.

f. Armor:
Eight (8) tanks (type unknown) were observed fording the KUM River near KONGJU, 28 Jul 50.

g. Artillery:
No information

h. Food and Ammunition Supply:
Ammo (approx 100 boxes 1½ x 2½ x 2½ feet) were placed in holes (approx 2 - 3 boxes per hole) near the road junction (approx 1 137.2 - 1352.5) in the YOHANG-MYON area. Ammo was transported here by trucks and carts (during 2400 to 0300 hours) from unknown place via KOSONG. Subject believes that this ammo will be used only by 15th Regiment. PW believes that only small-arms ammo was stored here.

i. Replacements:
Approximately 400 South Korean conscripts joined 15th Regiment on 17 Aug 50 at PAEDUN-NI as replacements. Approximately 300 South Korean conscripts joined the 15th Regt on 29 Aug 50 at YOHANG-MYON.

j. Enemy Intentions:
The objective of the 6th Division was CHINHAE.

k. Morale:
The morale of the South Koreans in the 15th Regiment was very low because they were always being fooled by North Koreans. The morale of the North Koreans in the 15th Regiment was good.

l. Captured Equipment:
U.S. M-1 Rifles and carbines were being widely used by North Korean troops.

4. GENERAL:
a. American POW:
Approximately 300 American POWs were seen at SUWON being transported by trucks or marching toward SEOUL during the night of 16 Jul 50. Approximately 150 American POWs were seen in a large building within SUNCHON on 5 or 6 Aug 50. Approximately 30 American POWs were observed in the capital building in HADONG on 7 Aug 50.

b. NK Airforce and Navy:
No information

Civilian Attitude:
South Koreans in CHOLLA PUKTO seemed to be glad that North Korean troops had come. People of other areas seemed to resent the North Koreans. A Peace Preservation Unit (治安隊) was formed in each captured village by the Communists.

c. Biological and Chemical Warfare:
No information
