2. ASSESSMENT:
PW not very intelligent. Seemed uncertain on movements of his unit. Asserts that code no. for 17th Regt (242) was in effect prior to war and up to his capture.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Date inducted. 4 Mar 50, SONDOK
Training: Received basic training with the 17th Regt, 2nd Div at SONDOK. Div Hq, 4th Regt and 6th Rcgt stationed at HAMHUNG at this time (hearsay),
17th Regt up to T/O strength and armed with new Russian rifles, Sub-MG's, LMG's, HMG's, and 82-mm Mortars. To the best of PW’s knowledge 17th Regt had no former Korean members of the CCF.
12 Jun 50, 17th Regt departed SONDOK by rail.
14 Jun 50, 17th Regt detrained at CH'ORWON (鐵原).
15 Jun 50, 17th Regt departed CH'ORWON (marched).
17 Jun 50, 17th Regt arrived HWACH'ON (華川), Engaged in miscellaneous duties around camp. No training.
26 Jun 50, 17th Regt, in reserve, crossed 38° Parallel N of CH'UNCH'ON (春川).
D/u, 2nd Plt, 5th Co, 2nd Bn, 17th Regt remained in YONGIN (龍仁) for approx 5 days performing highway guard duty.
D/u, 2nd Plt motored to a small village approx 12 km S of CHINCH'ON (鎭川). Guarded 2nd Div ammunition dump for about a week. Ammunition for 120-mm Mortars, 76-mm Guns, 45-mm AT Guns, 82-mm Mortars, dispersed in small piles and camouflaged with leaves, just outside of village. Front lines, at this time, 10-12 km S of CH’ONGJU (淸州). Ammunition was transported nightly, to division by trucks.
D/u, 2nd Plt motored to a point approx 30 km NW of KUMCH’ON then marched to its unit bivouac area located approx 8 km N of KUMCH’ON. Entire 2nd Div in reserve at this time and bivouaced in the immediate area.
O/a 27 Aug 50, 17th Regt marched by way of mountain trails to assembly area approx 4 km W of NAKTONG River. (Overheard company officers mention HYONP'UNG (玄風). Movements of 4th and 6th Regts, unknown. Additional small arms ammunition distributed to riflemen at assembly area, increasing amount to 130 rounds per rifleman. 6-day ration (1½ sho) of uncooked rice issued to each man.
30 2400 Aug 50, 2nd Bn supported by artillery waded (waist deep) the NAKTONG River, unopposed, in order of 4th, 5th and 6th Cos. 1st and 3rd Bns. Remained at assembly area and subsequent deployment of battalions unknown,
31 Aug 50, 2nd Bn advanced approx 4 km W of River, capturing with ease, a fairly high ridgeline.
1 1200 Sep 50, 2nd Bn counterattacked by mixed (US-Korean) infantry units supported by tanks. PW observed 5 iarge US tanks giving close-in support to the infantry.
PW captured immediately after the start of the counterattack by Korean infantrymen. At time of PW’s capture, 2nd Bn faced with the danger of being encircled, was preparing to withdraw.

Replacements:
2nd Div received replacements at KUMCH’ON, while in reserve. PW’s company received 15. 2nd Div was near T/O strength, however, less than at start of war.
