Military History:
Inducted 11 Jul 49 at an unknown place in MANCHURIA into the 166th CCF Division. Departed MANCHURIA 16 Jul 49 - arrived NANAM 19 Jul 49 by train. 60 recruits with PW were assigned to the 5th Division in NANAM (羅南). The 60 men were all Koreans. Trained at NANAM with the 11th Regiment, 5th Division until 19 Jun 50. Trained as a rifleman and engineer Engineer training consisted of laying land mines. The 5th Div departed NANAM 19 Jun 50 by train - arrived YANGYANG (襄陽) 25 Jun 50. At YANGYANG the Division’s Regiment separated.
11th Regt departed YANGYANG same day, marched and arrived KANGNUNG (江陵), D/U. From KANGNUNG marched through YONGWOL (寧越), CH'UNYANG (春陽), YONGHAE (寧海), YONGDOK (盈德), CHANGSA-DONG (長沙洞) and HUNGHAE to HUNGHAE. PW was in the 11th
Regt Independent Engineer Platoon and had been in the rear digging dugouts for the regimental CO and staff. Equipment consisted of two (2) shovels, one (1) pick, one (1) axe and two (2) saws. Unit never had land mines. Because the infantry units were under strength at HUNGHAE he was assigned to 1st Co, 1st Bn, 11th Regt. From HUNGHAE the 11th Regt separated and the 1st Battalion moved to INJE-DONG (仁提洞). PW does not know where too other units of the 11th Regt were. 1st Bn arrived at INJE-DONG on 24 Aug 50. At INJE-DONG the 1st Battalion dug in. 30 Aug 50 the 1st Sqd, 3rd Plt was ordered to go up in the mountains and hold an outpost for the battalion which was dug in at the bottom of the mountain.
On 31 Aug 50 the outpost was attacked and shelled, During this firing the squad leader was killed and PW and other 6 men of the 1st Squad was captured by ROK troops. At time of capture, PW was armed with M1891/30 rifle, 150 rounds and 2 grenades, PW stated he did not observe or hear of any other Units in the vicinity of the 5th Division.
