ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 853　31 August 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0643)　29 August 1950

PW was cooperative, however, immediate information on 15th Div was limited because he separated from his unit on 21 Aug 50. PW suffered from a leg wound.

Inducted 18 Jun 48 at P'YONGYANG. Received 6 months Inf basic training at P'YONGYANG with the Indept Guard Regt which was directly attached to the Home Ministry Bureau. PW was in the 3rd Bn, 9th Co, 1st Plt. This regt performed guard duties in P'YONGYANG guarding factories, RR, homes of VIP’s, public meetings. PW stated that between Aug 49 to Feb 50 the 15th Div, was activated. Men from the Guard Regt were placed into the 45th, 48th and 50th Regts. PW joined the. 45th Regt 20 Aug 49 at P'YONGYANG. Between Aug 49 - Feb 50 Korean officers and men formerly with the CCF from the 1st and 3rd Div also were assigned to the 15th Div. 27 Jun 50; the 15th Div Hqs and the 48th Regt came from HOERYONG to P'YONGYANG, the 50th Regt from NAJIN. The three Regts having assembled at P'YONGYANG 27 Jun 50 left left for the front 28 Jun 50.

Departed MUGUNG-NI 13 Jul 50 - marched - arrived MUN’GYONG 20 Jul 50 - engagement 45th Regt - over 200 KIA

Departed MUN’GYONG 24 Jul 50 - marched - arrived SANGJU (尙州) 30 Jul 50.

Departed SANGJU 2 Aug 50 - marched - arrived KUMCH’ON (金泉) 8 Jul 50.

100 replacements arrived for 45th Regt. Replacements for other Regts arrived also, number unknown. Departed KUMCH’ON 13 Aug 50 - marched. Between 15 Aug 50 and 19 Aug 50 PW in constant action. Arrived HAJANG-DONG (1140-1470) 19 Aug 50. Met man from 15th Div 45th Regt - 600 men remained. 1 x 120mm gun, 4 x 45mm gun, 7 x 82mm mortar. Entire 15th Div arrived at HAJANG-DONG. Before crossing NAKTONG River PW stated that approx 100 replacements placed in his regf, In engagement at HAJANG-DONG 45th Regt reduced to less than 400 men. PW wounded. Believed all heavy weapons destroyed, Three wounded soldiers including PW did not know where they were heading 21 Aug 50. They called. to fellow soldiers for assistance but no one answered. PW arrived at “SOI-RI” approx 6 km SE of TABU-DONG (1140-1460) alone 23 Aug 50 because the other two soldiers died.

PW stayed in “SOI-RI” until 28 Aug 50 when he was captured by the ROK 10th Regt. The ROk troops asked him why he did not give himself up earlier. he said that he had not given up because he thought they would kill him.

At present subject believed there ate only 400 men in the 45th Regt. Before PW was wounded he only saw one 120mm mortar (21 Aug 50). PW does not know what happened to the 15th Div after 21 Aug 50.

After KUMCH’ON PW stated there was an average of 20 rounds per man. Received food once every other day. Source and route of supply unknown.

15th Div objective was TAEGU.
