Evaluation:
PW was cooperative and his information seemed fairly reliable. However, his information was limited.

Military History:
1 Dec 48 -
PW was inducted at MUKDEN, MANCHURIA. Attached to the 166th Div, 2nd Regt, 2nd Bn, MG Co, 2nd Plt, 6th Sqd. PW received 4 months basic training (close order drill, political training and operation of Jap HMG, fired 25 rounds with Jap HMG)
The 166th Div (1st, 2nd and 3rd Regt) was composed of Koreans.
o/a 19 Jul 49 - The 116th Div departed MUKDEN, MANCHURIA by train. The let Regt left first and too 2nd and the 3rd Regt’s followed, The troops did not. know that they wore going to N. KOREA. These Koreans did not volunteer to come to KOREA.
20 Jul 49 - The 166th Div reached SINUIJU (新義州). The 166th Div was redesignated the 6th Div. PW was reassigned to the AT Rifle Plt, 2nd Bn of the 1st Regt. PW learned the operation of AT Rifle from pictures. The troops engaged in company, battalion, regimental exercises while in SINUIJU. Troops had 2 hours of political training every week. The Japanese rifles were turned in and troops received Russian M1891/30 rifles.
? Feb 50 - About 200 Koreans (from N. KOREA) were attached to the 1st Rest and were distributed to each battalion.
? Apr 50 - The 1st Regt was transferred to SIPYON-RI (시변리) and attached to the 1st. Div. The 6th Div Hqs was still located at SINUIJU at this time. PW did not know what happened to the 2nd and 3rd Regt’s of the 6th Div. The 1st Regt constructed an unknown number of barracks (capacity 150 men per barracks) Apr 50 to Jun 50. The troops of the 1st Regt lived in these barracks after the construction was completed. The 1st Regt was issued an unknown number of 82-mm Mortars, 120-mm Mortars, AT Rifles, 76-mm Howitzers, HMG’s, LMG’s, Sub-machine guns o/a 10 Jun 50.
For 5 days these weapons were tested.
23 Jun 50 - The 1st Regt was ordered to the 38° Parallel (location unknown) on maneuvers.
25 Jun 50 - The troops were told by the officers that the war started because the ROK troops crossed the 38° Parallel.
D/u Jul 50 - The 1st Regt entered SEOUL.
D/u Jul 50 - The 1st Regt departed SEOUL.
D/u Jul 50 - The 1st Regt reached CHUNGJU (淸州) via ICH'ON.
O/a 9 Aug 50 - The 1st Regt reached KUNWI (軍威) via HAMCH’ANG (咸昌)
23 Aug 50 - The 1st Regt was surrounded by ROK troops. PW estimated that about 300 men remained in the 2nd Bn, 1st Regt.
27 Aug 50 - PW and a friend were separated from the unit and were captured by the ROK troops at a point approx 7 km S of KUNWI.

1st Div CG: CH'OE, KWANG (최광); Rank, Maj Gen; Age, unknown.
1st Regt CO: HWANG, FNU (黃); Rank, Col; Age, about 30 years Formerly was in the 3rd Regt, 166th Div in MANCHURIA.
2nd Bn CO: AN, SONG HUM (안성홍); Rank, Maj; Age 27 years Former CO of 2nd Bn, 2nd Regt; 166th Div. He had served in the Jap Army as a corporal.
AT Rifle Plt Ldr: CHO, PYONG HI (조병히); Rank, Jr Lt; Age, about 28 years. Former asst squad leader in 2nd plt, HMG Co, 2nd Bn, 2nd Regt, 166th Div in MANCHURIA. Commissioned Jr Lt at SANGJU, Jul 50.

1st Regt (1st Div) 3 rifle battalions (about 600-700 men per battalion); 45-mm AT Gun Co (about 40 men, 6 AT Guns); 76-mm Howitzer Unit (No of men unknown, 5 x 76-mm Howitzers); 120-mm Mortar Co (no of men unknown, 6 x 120-mm Mortars); Sub-machine Gun Co (150 men armed with Sub-machine Guns); Signal Co (150 men); Medical Co (100 men, 3 medical officers).
Rifle Bn - 3 rifle companies (each Co - 150 men, 2 x HMG’s, 9 x LMG’s, 18 x Sub-machine Guns and rifleman armed with M1891/30 rifles).
82-mm Mortar Co (70-80 men. 9 x 120-mm Mortars).
HMG Co ( 70-80 men. 6 x HMG’s)
45-mm AT Gun Plt (15 men. 2 x 45-mm AT Guns)
AT Rifle Plt (23 men. 9 x AT Rifles)

Replacements:
PW stated that the privates in the 1st Regt were mostly replacements, as of Aug 50. Number of replacements in 1st Regt, unknown.

Casualties:
PW estimated that 300 men remained in the 2nd Bn, 1st Regt (o/a 26 Aug 50). Losses in other units unknown.

Capabilities of unit:
Morale of the troops. dropped due to shortage of food and artillery shelling by the ROK troops.

Artillery:
PW stated that he did not see any artillery pieces in the vicinity of KUNWI (軍威). Artillery units were always delayed because of bad roads.

Vehicles:
PW heard from one of the replacements that about 30 trucks arrived in SANGJU (尙州) o/ a 15 Aug 50.

Supplies:
PW had not eaten for 3 days when he was captured. Food was very short. Artillery and mortar shells were also short. However, there was still considerable rifle a ammunition. The riflemen still carried about 100 rounds of ammunition o/a 26 Aug 50.
PW heard from an ammunition carrier that there was plenty of ammunition in the rear (location unknown).
