Composition of Unit:
1st Division


Mission:
The unit’s mission was to capture TAEGU.

Training:
PW received 3 months of basic training from 15 August 47 to November 47 to November 47.
From 17 November 47 to 9 March 48 at TOMA CHAT KU, MANCHURIA, he received 2 hours of political training, 6 hours of combat training daily.
Training was repeated in SINUIJU on 20 September 49 to February 50, consisting of Political training 4 hours daily, combat training 4 hours.
Unit was reviewed by Russian Advisors on 8 February 50 at an old airfield located about 1,500 meters from SINUIJU.

On 20 August 50 18th Division, 18th Regiment left KUNWI at 1600 hours and arrived at KASAN 22 August 50. Engaged in battle with the South Korean and was captured on 23 August 50.

Foreign Elements:
Russian advisor was seen at SINUIJU reviewing the troops. From 23, July 49 to 15 July 50 the Russian advisor was with the unit. Russian advisor was last seen at SIBYON NI. PW heard that when the unit crossed the 38th parallel, the Russian advisor returned to SIBYON NI. GAZ-67 (Jeep) was used by the Russian advisor.

Political and Subversive activities:
Anti-South Korean Propaganda: PW heard from the Company commander that the South Korean people were under UNITED STATES capitalism and that the lower class people were suffering from rules of the capitalistic government and that the North, Koreans are fighting to help the lower class people and destroy capitalism. The commander also stated that their sacrifice is great but will gain much in the long run.
Radio Broadcasts: They were forbidden to hear any South Korean Broadcasts.
Leaflets: PW saw leaflets at KUANG JU, CHONGU but was ordered not to read them.
Airfields and Aircraft: An unused airfield was located about 1,500M from SINUIJU.
PWs in North Korea: Source observed approximately 10 American and 40 South Korean soldiers captured by the North Korean forces. They were on a Russian (GAZ-51) truck at KUANG JU on 10 July 1950. PW heard from the truck driver that they were going to be sent to SEOUL.
On 13 August 1950, PW observed about 20 South Korean PWs at AN KAE on a Russian (GAZ-5) truck being sent north.

Weapons most feared by the North Koreans:
Artillery and aircraft strafing are most feared by the North Korean troops and people.
