Departed P’YONGYANG 1 Dec 48 by rail - arrived NANAM 2 Dec 48. Attended NCO Training School, NANAM, 8 months. Transferred to Officers Training School. Departed NANAM 16 Aug 49 - railroad with about 40 others who had been attending NCO Trng Sch - arrived P’YONGYANG 21 Aug 49. Graduated from officers Training School after a 2 months course in infantry subjects. Commissioned Jr Lt, P’YONGYANG 31 Oct 49.

Engaged ROK units 23 Aug 50 - IMAM-NI on a hill. 3rd Bn (PW’s Bn) made frontal attack while 1st and 2nd Bns tried to envelope the hill. 23 0610 Aug 50, men of 73rd Regt’s, 1st, 2nd & 3rd This scattered in confusion by artillery and aircraft. PW lost contact with his platoon. PW decided to desert and surrender 23 1800 Aug 50, with asst sqd ldr of PW’s 2nd Squad. Surrendered to ROK soldiers 23 1830 Aug 50.

Foreign Elements:
2 Soviet Lt Cols and 1 Soviet Major attached as advisors to 73rd Regt. PW observed them with the 73rd Regt at SEOUL o/a 13 Aug 50, as they got off the train PW was riding.

Weapons and Personnel:
73rd Regt had 3 mortar companies but no mortars (23 Aug 50). Each of 3 x MG Cos in 73rd Regt; had 3 x MAXIM HMG’s (23 Aug 50). Each plt had 3 x DP LMGs and 5 x PPsh SMGs (23 Aug 50). Losses: Approx 50% of personnel in 73rd Regt; (23 Atig 50). No replacement men or equipment (23 Aug 50).

Armor:
Observed none.

Artillery and Vehicles:
Observed 2 x 122mm and 2 x 76mm truck-drawn artillery pieces, CH’ONGSONG o/a 21 Aug 50.

Supplies:
No supplies (including food) delivered after 73rd Regt departed SINUIJU (3 Aug 50). Rations were all eaten and personnel depended solely on confiscated food from farmers while 73rd Regt was enroute.

Enemy Intentions:
Objective of 73rd Regt - IMAM-NI. PW not informed of mission after that. No gas equipment or training received.

Additional Information:
Observed no guerrillas. PW stated that 4th, 5th mid 6th Bs of 73rd Regt remained at SINUIJU (3 Aug 50) and that they were up to full strength. 7th, 8th and 9th Bns of 73rd Regt has been activated but only the officer complement were present. There were no EM as of 3 Aug 50. PW believed that the 9 Bns of 73rd Regt were to be formed into a division at a later date (date & Div unk). PW stated that some field grade officers in 73rd Regt of SINUIJU (3 Aug 50) referred to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bras as an Independent Regt of the 73rd Unit. Observed 4 single engine monoplanes with NK markings at SINUIJU Airfield (2) Aug 50). Wings of planes were above fuselage.
Morale of Pvts and NCOs in 73rd Regt, was low because even NCOs had not had more than 2 months training and because there was insufficient food and ammunition (15-20 rounds per man). PW believes that majority of men would surrender if they found an opportunity to do so.
Saw Safe Conduct passes dropped IMAM-NI 23 Aug 50. Road contents of one picked up by EM who was a friend of PW.
