ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 788　28 August 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0568)　26 August 1950

PW was cooperative, however information was limited due to lack of education.

Inducted 3 Jul 50 at UIJU (義州). Received 22 days of infantry basic training at HAEJU (海州). 20 men departed 3 Jul 50 UIJU - by rail - arrived 7 Jul 50 - HAEJU. 20 men placed in the 7th Division. Departed HAEJU - 29 Jul - by rail - arrived SUSAEK (水色) 1 Aug 50. Only the 3rd Regt, 7th Div PW did not see or hear of the 1st or 2nd Regt. Departed SUSAEK 1 Aug - marched - arrived YONGDONGP’O (永登浦) 2 Aug 50. Only the 3rtd Bn arrived at YONGDONGP’O. Whereabout of 1st and 2nd Bn’s unknown.

Departed YONGDONGP’O 2 Aug 50 - marched - arrived TAEJON - date unknown Aug. When 3rd Bn arrived at TAEJON he saw the 1st and 2nd Bns.

Departed TAEJON - ? Aug 50 - truck - arrived CHINJU (晉州) 15 Aug 50. Places travelled between TAEJON and CHINJU - unknown. 3rd Regt arrived at CHINJU.

Departed CHINJU - 15 Aug 50 - marched - arrived TONGYONG (統營) 17 Aug 50. The 1st Bn, 3rd Rifle Co of the 3rd Bn and one squad of the AT Plt of the 3rd Bn went to T’ONGYONG. Whereabout of the rest of the Bn’s was unknown. 19 Aug 50, while the 1st Bn, 3rd Rifle Co of the 3rd Bn and one squad of the At Plt of the 3rd Bn were on a hill they encountered the ROK Marines. Approx 200 NKPA troops were killed. PW and 2 others surrendered to the ROK Marines at 1300 hrs. PW believed about 200 NKPA troops retreated to KOSONG (固城).

3rd Bn - 700 men; 3 Rifle Co’s.

Riffle Co - approx 150 men; 3 platoons in each; 4 squads in each platoon; Squad - 10 men.

Squad leaders carried either PPsh 1943 or 1941 Sub-machine gun, rounds unknown. All men carried M1891/30 rifle, 50-60 rounds. There was one DP LMG to a rifle squad.

One MG Co in a battalion. 2 x Maxim HMG in Co.

One AT Plt in a battalion - 23 men; 3 squads in platoon; Squad 7 men. 9 x 14.5-mm PTRS-41 in platoon. 2 men per AT rifle, 20-24 rounds. 12 x M1938 Carbines, 50 rounds.

One Signal Platoon in battalion. Details unknown.

45-mm Mortar in battalion - 20 men; 1 x 45-mm Mortar. Other details lacking.

81-mm Mortar Platoon in battalion - No mortars.

Unknown.

Received ammunition at HAEJU. No resupply.

Received 2 meals a day. Rice was usually taken from farm village.

When PW left HAEJU the platoon leader told them that their first mission was CH’ONAN. It changed to CHINJU, T’ONGYONG and finally to MASAN.

16 Aug 50, at KOSONG, PW was about 50 men from the 6th Div with over 5 mortars (bore unknown).

The 3rd Bn men were blue uniforms (fatigue clothes) because there was a shortage of regular uniforms.

1st and 2nd Bn were the regular uniform (mustard colored).
