ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 784　27 August 1950

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0587)　25 August 1950

Inducted on 6 Jul 50, NAMSINUIJU (南新義州) on same day PW was assigned to 73rd Ind Regt, 3rd Bn 3rd Co, 3rd Plt, 4th Sqd. PW states 1st Bn and 2nd activated on 5 Jul and 3rd Bn organized on 6 Jul. Therefore PW believed that 73rd Ind Regt was organized o/a 3 Jul 50, and the Regt Hqtrs situated in SINUIJU. The mortar co was in name only and actually they were armed with M1938 carbines instead of mortars as of 23 Aug 50. 1st Bn and 2nd Bn left NAMSINUIJU for the south on 2 Aug 50. 3rd Bn departed NAMSINUIJU on 3 Aug by rail and arrived P’YONGYANG (平壤) 4 Aug 50.

Departed TOP’YONG-DONG 21 Aug - marched - arrived 4 km N of IMAM-NI (立岩里) 22 Aug 50. From here 3rd Bn advanced south to vicinity of IMAM-NI. 3rd Bn was attacked by ROK troops unexpectedly and surrounded and captured 200 meters west of IMAM-NI 23 Aug 50.

Casualties: mortar Co - lost approx 30 men to machine gun fire at IMAM-NI 23 Aug 50. No replacement of men or equipment 23 Aug 50.

Ammunition last received at NAMSINUIJU. 14 rounds per man left. On evening of 9 Jul 50, PW observed approx 30 flat-cars with 30 trucks passing through NAMSINUIJU station travelling south. From 9-14 Jul 50 observed numerous freight trains with trucks and supplies going south. PW believes all these supplies were coming from Soviet Russian via Manchuria.

PW states there is an airfield located approx 2 km SW of NAMSINUIJU however, PW never saw or heard airplanes (Hearsay from air corps men in SINUIJU). This airfield was used as 6th Bn, 73rd Regt training field.

His company was told that they not going to fight with the enemy. Their primary mission was to police occupied areas. The men were afraid to close with the enemy because they felt they didn’t have enough ammunition and they had never fired their weapons.
